So far has cut 3 winters worth of wood

I am very happy with the results of this saw. We had a lot of storm damage a little over 3 years ago. So far I have cut all the wood for the last 3 winters with this saw. We heat our home only with wood and live in northern MN. It exceeded my expectations. I bought it thinking I would just use it in the yard. I prefer it over my gas chainsaw and use it all the time. I have multiple batteries so I can change them out when I am out in the woods to fill the truck.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Just tried it for the first time, it works great! Cut through the base of a shrub with ease along with many limbs. I’m impressed... this is everything I was told and read about. For the average home owner this is a safe choice. I recommend purchasing a greenworks chainsaw.

Better Than a Gas Powered Saw

This saw works great, just as good as a gas powered saw; maybe better. It is quiet (no need for ear plugs and you can easily communicate in a talking voice with helpers) and light. Very efficient; only use power when you need it. No loud saw sitting on idle while you position for your next cut. Battery lasts long. I cleared brush for 2 hours and I’m ready for a break before the battery is empty. Bar chain oil usage seems on par with a typical saw. Probably could use two full batteries before the oil is empty.

Finally, a REAL battery-op chainsaw!!!

The power is impressive and the weight is heavy enough and well balanced. Cuts through oak and hickory just fine. I'm getting about 50 cuts per battery charge but that's all 8-inch+ diameter hardwoods. If you're cutting pine you'll get more. Easy enough to find a replacement chain and there's a window to see just how much bar oil you have left in the reservoir. The only thing I would improve is selling it with a real case but this review is for the tool itself, which more than holds its own against my two gas powered saws.

I really wanted this to be the one

Tool should function much better than it does. Chain has come off a few times and support walked me through some troubleshooting. I completed the trouble shooting by saying the chain came off again but then it held for 4-5 minutes. I tried it again and it failed.

Hello Zach 5809,

We are sorry to hear that you have experienced an issue with the chain not staying on. We see that you have been in contact, and our Customer Care team are doing our best to work towards a solution. We would be interested in gathering more details regarding this experience so that we can appropriately address your concern. Please reach out to our team directly at 1-888-909-6757 and provide your customer id# at the beginning of the call so we can take a closer look into your recent chat with us.
In the meantime, we’d like to offer some troubleshooting suggestions you may find helpful.
If the chain is continuously coming off while in use, it could be due to one of the reasons below. Please check the following.
• Make sure the adjusting block is properly engaged in the bar cut-out and that the chain has been properly tensioned prior to use. When properly tensioned the chain should feel snug but still pull away just enough to slide a dime between the bar and chain.
• Ensure that you are using a compatible chain that matches the figures listed in your owner’s manual (drive links, gauge, and pitch).
• Verify that the chain wheel is undamaged and that all parts are accounted for. Always refer to the instructions in your manual for replacing the chain to verify which parts your specific model should have.
• Verify that the bar and chain are not damaged.
Replace the bar if:
The groove is not fit with the height of the drive links (which must never touch the bottom).
The inside of the guide bar is worn and make the chain lean to one side.
• New chains will stretch and must be tensioned more often while in use. *DO NOT TENSION A CHAIN AFTER YOU HAVE FINSHED USING THE TOOL. HOT METAL EXPANDS. IF THE CHAIN IS TENSIONED WHEN HOT, THEN ALLOWED TO COOL, THE CONTRACTING METAL COULD POTENTIALLY DAMAGE THE CHAIN, THE BAR AND EVEN THE UNIT. WAIT UNTIL THE NEXT USE (OR AT LEAST UNTIL COOLED) BEFORE TENSIONING*

If all the parts are present, undamaged, and correctly assembled and proper tensioning procedure is followed then this issue will be fixed 100% of the time. This process can should be repeated more than once if issues persist to ensure that no steps have been overlooked.

Could be So Good

I purchased this saw a year ago, but did not use it until recently. It looks like a nicely engineered saw. If only it worked as good as it looks. The chain has come off 4 times in the first 2 uses. The first time I attributed it to being a new saw and the chain breaking in. Unfortunately, it continued to do this despite proper tightening (and torquing of the fasteners). I have 4 other professional level saws and know how to properly tension the chain. I have no similar problems with these saws. All other aspects of this saw appear to be excellent if only the chain would stay on. I am hoping that Greenworks has an engineering solution and anxiously await their comments on this issue. Right now the saw is very frustrating to use.
2/5/23: I used the saw again yesterday and the chain once again came off. Other than that, the rest of the saw seems excellent. I am thinking that the problem is the thin bar and chain that they provide. I am hoping to hear something soon from Greenworks about a solution.
Pros: Convenient, Easy to Use, Quiet, Environmentally Safe
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Hello ericjimdor,

Thank you for your review. We are sorry to hear that you have experienced an issue with the chain not staying on. New chains tend to stretch; so be sure to check the chain tension frequently and tension as required. However, be sure to never tension a warm chain before storing as chains shrink when cooling and this can damage the chain, bar and saw. Please ensure that when you remove the side cover, the chain wheel is secured to the shaft. If the chain wheel is not secured this could be causing issues with the chain staying. If the chain is secured the issue would be the tension procedure.
If you're still experiencing issues, please contact Greenworks Pro toll-free helpline at 1-855-345-3934. We would like to hear more of your experience and provide an instructional guide to help you navigate the tension on your chainsaw.

I bought the 80 volt 18 inch chain saw. Great machine for me the first charge overnight it lasted about 30 minutes and all lights lit as full charge was at about 20 minutes. The oak log I cut laying on another log is 23 inches in diameter so it took two cuts to complete the next was a few branches and another couple pieces of the main trunk. I am very pleased with this unit. I like the quit operation. I will probably switch to an Oregon chain with a (what I think) better roller nose bar. Can't wait to have enough $$$ to buy another battery. Very strong cutter!!

We purchased this 18" cordless electric chainsaw after using a 16" chainsaw and a 10" polesaw manufactured by Greenworks. Although the chainsaw we purchased is larger, it is every bit as quiet, efficient, and easy to handle as the two smaller electric saws. The need for a cordless power tool is pretty obvious, but switching from gas- to electric-power makes very good sense for working outdoors in the tinder-dry Western US: We don't want to be the ones who start a forest fire. Also, and most personally important to us, is the incredible power of this tool. We both have damaged our hands and wrists over the decades with tough outdoor work on farms, ranches, woodlands, and foreign wars. This chainsaw has all the power we need, without the bucking, kickback, or resistance of old-fashioned gas-powered chainsaws. Cutting logs is almost as easy as slicing bread with this saw. Love it!
