Fall seeding was a success

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was able to get this seed down in early October and at first I was a little concerned that I would not have enough time to for the seed to germinate and for the grass to be established before the first frost. In the end it all worked out. I used the seed for patching a few areas that were bare due to a crabgrass infestation. Overall about 85% of the bare spots were repaired and the lawn looked great. I will reseed in the spring to take care of the remaining bare spots.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Scott’s Turf Builder grass seed dense shade mix really helped my lawn. I had a big patch under some trees where I thought grass would never grow. I used this seed and was amazed at how fast I was able to get grass to grow in.

Grass grows where others before it failed

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I tried growing grass in a very shady location a few times previously with no luck, but this product did what previously seemed impossible. My backyard is mostly shade and mostly clay, so it's a tough task to grow in new areas. I had others more knowledgeable tell me I'd never grow grass in this particular location but this stuff did the trick It says it includes a ground treatment in addition to a growth fertilizer. I have many other shady areas and will definitely use this seed in the future. The picture shown is after about 3 weeks of growth. It's still coming in thicker every few days.

Growing where nothing else wants to grow

Planted this seed under trees because my yard is ever changing. 20 years ago I had no trees to speak of in the backyard and now it's more of a state park type setting. Scalped the entire back yard with a power rake and thought what have I done now. Over seeded entire yard plus used Scotts Dense shade where all that was growing was a few sprigs of desperate turf but mostly moss. Water per directions for 10 days applied Scotts starter fertilizer and BOOM! The sunny parts of the yard before the project would make most lawn owners envious. Now it looks better than some of their own commercials. And yes I have a 40 hour/wk job. Can't wait until next spring. Purchasing a Scotts reel mower. HA!
Pros: Good Directions

Worth the price

This Dense Shade mix is the only grass seed that we have had success with. Our yard is surrounded by large pine and oak trees and the lawn has slowly deteriorated over time. One application of the Dense Shade mix and some starter fertilizer brought new life to our lawn! I would recommend this to anyone who has a lot of shade and maybe not-so perfect soil. Works the first time!
Pros: Quality, Effective
Cons: a bit pricey

Shady spot

I purchased the product for a thickly shaded area of my yard. I had sewn grass in the same spot for the past two years. I was surprised at the results. This grass grew in every spot that I had sewn it on. It looks great now. I definitely don't miss that bare area of my yard. Now all this spot needs is some turf builder to thicken things up a little. Thanks Scott's for a good product

Moss be gone, I have new lawn!!!

Pleasantly surprised with the results! I bought a small bag over a year ago for use under a densely shaded area where nothing but moss grew before. I sat the bag aside in my garage until I could get to the project. One long list of projects later, I thought I'd give the old bag a whirl. Easy!! I just raked the area a bit, back combed, and watered. Can't say that I was even that regular with my watering, and it's been a hot and humid spring thus far, but it came in great! I was so happy, I bought more seeds and some top soil to extend the area and really do the job right! Fingers crossed it survives the summer drought.

Grass Seed Dense Shade Mix

AFter 2 weeks of applying the grass seed, there is no sign of any grass growing. It was watered once daily with temps in the 60-70's, seed was visible all over the first week but now only visible in some areas and no sign of grass growing. The ground was worked as direacted with soil added thinly over the area under the 2 maple trees. I was so looking forward to having grass in the front yard where it was bare; not sure what the problem is, or if another application of seed would grow. Lot #14020161 used in MN.
Cons: Didn't work as expected
Response from ScottsBy DrewConsumer ServicesJuly 16, 2015
We're saddened to hear that the grass seed did not grow as expected. Because you are attempting to grow grass under 2 Maple trees, it is important to note that for even the most shade tolerant of grass seeds (in this case, Fescue) the area should see at least 4 hours of direct sunlight daily in order for the grass to be able to thrive.
