Great for patching

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We used this grass seed to patch some areas that didn’t grow previously. We aerated, added the seed, and added straw on top. We watered everyday and within two weeks or so you could see the grass shoots starting to fill in.

Grows in shade like it says.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This grass seed will definitely grow in shade, but it will grow in slowly. I'm not sure if this is because of the cool spring that slowed germination. What has grown in is still alive and thriving in an area that had significant bare spots. This area does receive some sun, maybe 4 hours a day.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Scotts® Turf Builder® Grass Seed Tall Fescue Mix is some of the best grass seed I have ever used. I planted it shortly after receiving the seed and it has grown nicely in areas that other seed has not grown in the past.

Planted and watered as directed. Not much seed sprouted. None sprouted in bare areas.

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Scotts Turf Builder Tall Fescue Mix and appreciate your feedback.

This grass seed will germinate best when temperatures are consistently in the 65-80 degree F range. Cool nighttime temperatures and fluctuating temperatures will slow germination. Both excessive moisture and not enough moisture can inhibit seed germination.

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Tall Fescue Mix and appreciate your feedback.

It is certainly frustrating to go through all the work of reseeding an area, only to have the results less than satisfactory. Water is an important factor in successful seeding. The newly seeded areas must be kept constantly moist for weeks on end. Allowing the soil to dry out even for an hour during the critical germination phase can result in seedling death. This may require that you give the seeded areas a light watering two to three times a day for the first few weeks. After that, you will still need to keep the seedlings watered on a regular basis. The soil should feel moist like a wrung-out sponge. Seeds must come into direct contact with the soil in order to germinate. A heavy cover of straw, soil, or other material will cause the seeds to rot, or severely limit germination. Cover seeds with no more than 1/4 of an inch (.63 centimeter) of topsoil or lawn soil. Two "enemies" of newly seeded lawns are herbicides and lawn diseases. While you have very little control over the outbreak of a lawn disease, do make sure that no weed control or weed prevention chemical has been used in the area, as those products will also prevent or inhibit germination. When used on newly germinated lawns, herbicides will kill off the new grass. Finally, temperature plays a critical role in seed germination. Soil temperatures must be at least 55°F (13°C) for northern type turf grass seed to germinate (Bluegrass, ryegrass, fescue). Air temperature must typically be between 60 and 80°F (15-26°C).

New scotts grass seed is now half filler.
on May 18, 2025
Posted by: SirGriz
New scotts seeds are all filler with half the seed. I have half an acre of lawn, been using scotts tall fescue for 10yrs. Recently they switched from having all seed in the bag to now half the amount of seed and the rest fertilizer (filler). Now my overseeding sucess is terrible. I just did a 500sq/ft section but required the whole 1750sq/ft bag to even see the seed and maybe 25% germination, terrible and expensive. For me to switch to a better, all seed product it will cost a fortune and be time consuming to switch my 1/2 acre lawn.

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Tall Fescue Mix and appreciate your feedback.

Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Tall Fescue Mix has two different seeding rates provided on the package. One is used in areas where you are seeding bare ground. Bare ground will use twice the amount of seed, and cover half the area, of a reseeding to thicken an existing lawn. We also recommend that you check your spreader settings and verify that it is calibrated correctly. Extra seed in an area is rarely a problem. However, in extreme cases, it is possible for the seed to be so crowded that germination rates are reduced.
