Thank you, Scotts, for your dense shade mix. The area under my large maple tree gets very little sun, and my soil is poor. I so much wanted grass to replace the muddy, ugly mess my dogs play in, and had high hopes for this product. It delivered! Important note: I followed its instructions to the letter--no deviation. I prepared the soil as directed, using the recommended Scotts soil with fertilizer, and I watered according to directions. I live in far north central Illinois, and planted in early May. Three weeks later, the first shoots appeared and from that point, we were off to the races. I took a before photo--so ugly! Today, the area is beautiful--my dogs and I enjoy it! Only bad thing is I have more to mow, ha ha. I am very grateful, highly recommend this product, and strongly suggest that you follow the directions exactly as on the bag.
Sorry the photos are sideways; I tried to fix it :(
Pros: Easy to Use, Effective, Good Directions, Quality, Value

I have bought this product two years in a row, both for fall and spring to reseed my lawn. Two years running and nothing has sprouted.
Cons: Didn't work as expected
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

We are sorry to hear that your Turf Builder Tall Fescue Grass Seed did not germinate as expected. There are many environmental factors that determine the success of seeding. We would be interested in speaking with you further about this so that we can learn why the product may not have worked. More weeds than seeds
on August 18, 2018

The amount of weeds that came up with the grass was unbelievable! This was spread on completely bare dirt that used to be a lawn a few years ago. Started watering the dirt about a week before and not a single weed sprouted back to life. Then I spread the seed, and yes, the grass seed sprouted quickly but so did the weeds! Pulled them out by hand over a few days and now have dead spots allllll over where the grass sprouts we're unavoidably pulled out with the weeds. And apparently this is only a shade grass because the areas of full sun are dying rapidly despite correctly watering.

We are sorry to hear that your Turf Builder Tall Fescue Grass Seed did not grow as expected. It is normal for weeds to germinate at the time of seeding. Preparing the soil brings the weed seeds to the surface, and the watering and fertilizer encourages the weed seeds to grow. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. At your earliest convenience, please contact us to see what can be done. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I like this blend. I'm used to the Sun & Shade mix but this took quick and looks great. Seems to be coming in nice and thick.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I raked, cleaned bare areas (removed weeds), and seeded with Scotts Tall Fescue Grass Seed Mix. Next, I applied the Turf Builder Starter Food plus Weed Preventer. Within 4 weeks, I started seeing 1/4 to 1/2 inch new grass. I also noticed the seeds were weed free. I highly recommend using these seeds with Scotts Turf Builder Starter Food plus Weed Preventer. I'm very happy with my results.

Didn't grow a blade

I live in Wisconsin and planted this in the middle of May. We had a lot of rain after that for the next week, and I diligently watered it every night. I did not see a blade of grass grow. I wouldn't ever buy again.

We are sorry to hear of your experience with Turf Builder Dense Shade Grass Seed Mix. For best results, the soil should be loosened prior to seeding, and then the seed should be watered lightly twice per day. However, too much watering can also inhibit seed germination. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. At your earliest convenience, please contact us to see what can be done. 5-7 days...& its spouting in Late July in North NJ

This is the 2nd time I have used this product, & i am N. New Jersey in summer with Not the best soil. I tilled the soil area 1-2" with a hard rake, but soil was already turned up do to excavation. This area only receives 1-3 hours or less of direct sunlight. I applied the seed with their small cheapo rotary spreader @ 13 setting, & lightly raked it in & then covered with a few bails of peat moss. I put a very very light amount of starter fertilizer by hand with glove on, (it burns). Then I over seeded with the shade mix again by hand on top. I watered 2x daily every day. Holy He#l bat man.. its germinating & sprouting rapidly & only 5-7 days!! Never had this luck! & my well water source is about a 6.6.3 pH. Temped to use this blend on full sun to see the results. good luck out there!
