The watersmart coating helped to germinate the grass seed quicker.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I had two problem areas to deal with. Bare spots and thin grass coverage. I applied this product to both areas at the same time. I loosened the soil on bare areas and then applied the grass seed. With over seeding I applied the product as per directions on bag. Watering was done according to directions on bag. I saw growth in about 8-10 days. Grass came up very nice and full, with lush green color. Product was easy to use and I will use it again to repair bare spots in my lawn. Try it you will like it.

Good features

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Although the product has good features it did not perform well for me. I have an area that is not in full shade but has not done well even with sun/shade grasses. The ground seems to be dead to grow things including weeds. This product sprouted but came up extremely thin considering the amount of seed I put down. The ground is not hard but could be a little less compact. NOTHING I have planted in this one area has done any good. It obviously is not the product but the place. Grass is growing everywhere else.
Pros: Easy to Use, Good Directions, Quality
Cons: Didn't work as expected

Inconsistent Quality

I have rated the Turf Builder® Tall Fescue Mix 2-star because of the inconsistency of the product and the resulting problems it causes the consumer. Last year I reviewed this grass seed giving it a 5-star rating with the view that it was the best grass seed that I had used. What happened this year? I began re-seeding several patches where unwanted Bermuda grass had invaded. I still had a small amount of the grass seed from last year. I then began planting using up this bag and then continuing with a bag purchased this year. The area where last year’s seed was used had grass seed germinating within a week whereas the area with the new seed showed only a few blades of grass after 17 days. I noticed that the bag that I had purchased this year had an out-of-date sell-by date so I returned it for a fresh bag thinking that was the problem. In calling Scott’s help line, the assistant did not think that it would cause the kind of problem that I was having. I replanted all the areas that I had planted with grass seed from this year. After about 2½ weeks, I had only marginally improved germination - and nowhere near what would be needed to be acceptable. By this time, I was becoming frustrated and annoyed because the optimum time for seeding fescue grass was rapidly disappearing. I noticed with the bag from last year that the seed covering was smooth. The seed covering for the two bags that I purchased this year was rough. I decided to try one more time because of my great success last year. Upon opening the third bag for this year, I noticed that the seed covering was smooth, so I was hopeful. Just to be sure that I was not doing something wrong, I replanted one area with seed from bag 2 and another area from bag 3. After one week, the seed from bag three germinated as thickly as one would expect. The area from bag 2 shows no sign of germination. Since there was a correlation between the outer surface of the seed and its ability to germinate, I hypothesize that the manufacturing process is not consistent, and that the rough water-smart coating covering the seeds prevented them from germinating. Since the non-germinating seed resulted in a considerable duplication of my time and a waste of water, I can no longer recommend this product. If you are lucky, and think that you will pick a good bag, then it should be fine. Just be aware, if you do not, you will likely become frustrated.

Keep in mind that the shelf life of grass seed is base on the Tested Date on the package not the Sell By Date. Grass seed looses about 5 to 7 percent of its germination every year after the Tested Date on the package. Too early to rate, just planted, but...

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I had some extra prep work I wanted to do before seeding, and just finished seeding yesterday (Sept 28th). Today I was e-mailed to post a review - so a true grass followup is needed. What I can say is that the blue colored coating on the seeds were helpful to see & control the coverage while I hand seeded. This coating is also supposed to have benefits for moisture retention, fertilizer, and disease prevention. We shall see if it grows. Here's a couple pictures of the area I'm working.

Great filler for the yard

Weeds!

I seeded my backyard 3 weeks ago with Scott’s Tall Fescue Mix. Yard was just turned over and weed free. Lawn is growing in nicely, including patches of weeds that make up about 20-25% of my lawn. Too many weeds, would not use this product again.
