Scotts Edgeguard DLX Broadcast Spreader

I bought this expensive spreader 2 years ago, giving my son my old broadcast spreader. Wish I would have kept the old one. This spreader is a poor design. The spreader wheel paddles are engineered poorly, throwing product on the edge guard prior to release in the broadcast area, causing excessive amount of fertilizer to drop versus broadcast, causing streaks in the grass. Yes, the edge guard was in the off position, and I made sure it was in the correct position. I put down crabgrass preventer the last 2 years, and fertilizer, both on dry grass. Yes, streaks were obvious. Recently I put down weed & feed, with wet grass. The edge guard, wheels are designed to accumulate the wetness, thus accumulating fertilizer. The result is clumps of fertilizer dropping throughout my area of spreading. I believe better engineering/testing could have gone into this product prior to release. Eliminate the areas where fertilizer can accumulate, work on proper/even broadcast, and not allow product to be released too early. Used Scotts products for many years, very disappointed with this spreader. Rethink purchasing the Edgeguard spreader.

Stripes!!

Poor design! Spin plate is below the top of the wheels causing your product to hit the wheels and dump 90% of your product (fertilizer or pesticides) between the wheels leaving dark stripes in your yard if fertilizer and most of the coverage area uncovered.

Put Scotts turff builder with moss killer on my lawn using a brand new spreader. Month later most moss is still there but now i have dark green stripes because the fertilizer didn't broadcast. it just fell straight down. And I did walk at a brisk pace. Must just be a bad design.

leaves 1 foot stripes

Bought this earlier in the year 2019. Couldn't tell there was a problem until i started putting down the fertilizer. Looking at the yard I have a checkerboard of deep dark green pattern about 4 feet apart and about 1 foot wide. This was exactly where i walked the yard vertically then horizontally laying out the fertilizer. Thinking it through I wanted to make another try with the spreader using another product to better see what the spreader was doing. This time I was able to see that a lot of the product was being slung into the wheel wells and dropping out the back, leaving excessive amounts of product between the wheels. The rotary portion is far to low in its design.

We are very sorry for all of the problems you are experiencing with your Scotts Turf Builder Edgeguard DLX Broadcast Spreader. When streaks appear after an application, you can be sure they are caused by a mechanical problem or human error. The width of the streaks along with the color of the grass will usually help determine the cause. Narrow, light green or yellowish streaks may be due to not properly overlapping when applying a product which contains fertilizer. The streaks simply have not been fertilized and have remained the same color as before the application. Darker or brighter green stripes typically indicate too much overlap therefore receiving more fertilizer so greened up more. At your earliest convenience, please contact us 1-888-270-3714.

Poor fertilizer distribution

I used my new Scott’s Edge Guard spreader to put down my pre-emergence weed killer and fertilizer and was horrified to see the dark green stripes going across my lawn (left to right in the photo). I though that I might have mistakenly left the edge guard extended, so a month later when I put on the broad leaf killer and fertilizer, I made sure that the guard was retracted and I went in a perpendicular direction to the original application. Again, a similar result with dark green stripes and poorly fertilized grass in between. The checkered pattern in my yard is disgraceful. I have read many other reviews that suggest that the fertilizer is being stopped by the back flange that houses the edge guard when it is retracted. The fertilizer hitting the flange drops straight to the ground and creates the overly concentrated green stripe. I have seen suggestions of removing the guard and cutting off the back flange. Come on Scott’s, this is an obvious flaw - step up and replace these spreaders with something that works!

Leaves streaks in yard.

I bought this spreader last summer and the first time I used it with Scott's Turf Builder it left streaks in the yard. I assumed I did something wrong. So this spring I used my old pull behind spreader with halts and again later with Scott's Turf Builder and yard looked great. So last week I decided to try my Edge Guard spreader one more time and once again it left streaks about 8 inches wide. If you value the looks of your yard don't use this spreader.

Wheel's accumulate fertilizer

I bought the Edgeguard DLX to replace an old broken spreader. Everything works fine, however very dissappointed in the wheel design. The wheels are only one-sided and accumulate fertilizer on the inside and drop clumps or a thick strip when turning, causing burning and killed grass
