Far from ideal

This Miracle-Gro Indoor Potting Mix is around 80% peat, some coconut coir, and a little perlite. I found basically no difference between this and Miracle-Gro Sphagnum Peat Moss. This mix has fertilizer included. So for the uninitiated, you can just put your seeds or plants in it, and start growing. Just add water and it will keep your plants alive. The mix is fine enough to start small seeds, and I used it successfully for that. I can't attest to the mix having fungus gnats or not, because I sterilized the mix before using it. I don't trust any mix that comes moist in a bag with little holes in it. The mix definitely attracts fungus gnats, and becomes infested if any gnats find their way to the moistened mix (before or after planting). The mix's water and air holding properties are far from ideal. The bag claims you can just water and let the excess water run out the bottom of the pot. It's not true. This mix soaks up water like a sponge, becoming almost fully saturated. The excess water does not drain out, and that's bad for your plants. Plant roots need oxygen, which they normally get from air in the soil. The fully saturated mix takes many days to dry to the proper moisture level, depending on the climate and on how thirsty your plants are. So practically speaking, you should never let this mix become fully saturated with water. You should only give it a measured amount of water, and it takes some trial and error to figure out how much water that is. Or you can add perlite to give this mix some air holding capacity, as much as 33-66% perlite. The amount of perlite already included in this mix is very small and accomplishes basically nothing. I found that the included fertilizer kept my plants going alright in the first couple of months, with growth slowing somewhat in the third month. Built-in fertilizer seems like a time saver, but what do you do when that fertilizer gets used up? Add more fertilizer of some kind, or re-pot in new mix? And how do you know when to do that? The manufacturer suggests using Miracle-Gro Plant Food, but that's not formulated for soilless growing. Since you're already growing in soilless media, just go all the way: go hydroponic. I switched from this potting mix to to a mix of coir and perlite, with all of the nutrients supplied hydroponically in the water. (The ScottsMiracle-Gro company has a subsidiary that makes good hydroponic nutrients) Growth was tremendously faster using the hydroponic method, and it's not really that much extra work. Mix the nutrient solution in advance in a large container. Supply it continuously to the bottom of the pot in a tray filled with the solution. Dump the tray and replace with fresh nutrient solution once per week. Top up with plain water between feedings. Apply the nutrient solution or water to the TOP of the medium, to dilute and flush the nutrient salts that accumulate at the top of the medium where it dries out.

Due to its composition this soil retains too much water. You will need to add other things to get it to the right ratios.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is the best potting mix I've ever used. I use it for starting indoor flowers and indoor herbs. Works great and requires minimal watering. I like to mix this with a little bit of topsoil in each container as that seems to work best.
Pros: Good Directions, Easy to Use, Quality, Value, Effective
I would recommend this to a friend!

Terrible product

I purchased this soil and ended up with mold and nats. The bags were intact when purchased. It is now killing my plants that I am keeping for my son who is out of the country. They were doing so well I had to put them in bigger pots so I purchased your indoor soil. I am a very experienced gardener and I know how to water plants. Wish I would have read the reviews before purchasing. I've been wondering where all the nats have been coming from and why NEW soil would be getting moldy. I'd add a photo but I just cut all the dead leaves off of the plants. There are NO pro's to this product unless you want to euthanize your plants.
Cons: Didn't work as expected

Not Good

I really wanted to love this stuff, as it’s readily available and is supposed to work for lots of houseplants. Unfortunately, this stuff is pretty awful. It holds water for far, far too long, and causes root rot. I have over 25 houseplants and haven’t had an issue with this until I planted one in this soil. Once I watered my plant, the soil stayed damp for TWO MONTHS. My plant is a tough one, but it got brown leaves, and suffered a lot of damage. I would not recommend, especially if your plant is sensitive to overwatering.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I used the new indoor potting mix to transplant my dying plant and within 2 weeks it is starting to grow new leaves and is coming back to life.
