Wifi doesn't work

I purchased the Timberline 850 last July, worked fine until Traeger updated the wifi software _ now it won't connect. Customer service has been horrible (and I am being kind). After multiple calls one rep finally admitted the techs were working on a fix. I was promised the I would get an update "still waiting" . . . in the meantime I paid $1800 for non-working technology. I could have bought a non-wifi pellet grill for $500. Sorry isn't enough but it's all you will get from customer service staff. If you are thinking about buying, best of luck, and maybe think gas.

It has been a year sense taking delivery.

It has been just over a year since getting my Timberline 850 delivered and I am just as excited about using it today as I was then!
The quality of the unit is solid, it looks just as good today as the day I purchased it and working great. The D2 controller is awesome, super easy to use and the temps are maintained to within few degrees (I have tested with other thermometers). Some have stated problems with connecting to WiFi but I had no trouble at all, first time it worked seamlessly. I love the D2 and Wifi, I have controlled the temps of my grill from across town and getting the alerts on the probe temps has allowed me to switch to the keep warm mode within the App which has been awesome.
I live in Ottawa, Canada and I have used my Timberline on the coldest of days (-40) with no problems at all, shovel a path to it and it has always started up and heated up with no problems at all. It does have a cold weather start setting so it takes a few minutes longer to start. The all around double wall construction is what made me pick the Timberline due to the cold temps and I am glad I did. I also keep mine very clean and vacuum out the dust regularly and wipe down the inside and outside of the grill often, looks brand new still.
Everything I cook on the grill has been exceptional, especially any type of poultry from full roast turkeys to chicken breasts or thighs, always juicy and flavourful. I have done Prime Ribs roasts, reverse seared and the taste was superb with the right about of smoke. Ribs have always been great and the queso dip with chorizo sausage is always a hit with guests.
I also purchased the rib rack recently and love that I can fit a ton of ribs on it and it fits the grill nicely. I also like the orange tray I ordered with it, nice for pulling meats off and for serving outside too.
After a year+ I am very happy with the purchase and by the looks of things, this thing will last many many years as well. Only downfall, the cover for it has began to fade and show a lot of aging, a bit of leaking too, that is disappointing.
I would highly recommend the Timberline 850, I have been happy with the performance, size and most of all the cook results, everything is always delicious.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love the grill and how well it works. The only problem I have noticed is the mechanical seal pulling out at the top of the lid. The design allows the seal to roll away from the lid during the closing process. I push the clips back in place but they continue to work out. Certainly not a deal breaker but I would appreciate the sharing of any new solutions you may being working on down the road.

assembly advice

I just bought the Timberline 850 and after quite a bit of research on pellet grills. I was originally going to buy the Ironwood 650 but once I was at the store a decided to go all in with the timberline 850. I am a pretty meticulous guy that pays attention to detail. I was so excited to assemble my grill and use it for the first time on Saturday. I watched assembly videos on line and also read the book prior to assembling my grill. I followed the instructions but there is one key point I would like to make. Both the video and the instructions tell you to lay the grill down on the cardboard box to make it easier to attach the legs. I took the advice along with the advice to use part of the packaging to elevate the grill a little before attaching the legs. I did just that and what they don't tell you is to make sure you secure the lid for the grill and the pellet bin. When I elevated the bottom just 2-3 inches both lids came open and banged into the brick patio floor. I was sick, I had not even assembled my grill yet and and the finish was already damaged. It took quite a bit of excitement out of the process and when I was cooking on it that afternoon all I could do was look at the scuffs and shake my head. The food turned out great but I am totally frustrated out about the scuffs on the lids. Please make sure you secure them prior to propping up the grill for leg attachment.

It is a great unit especially for the colder areas in climate. Traeger got fancy and created a design flaw for the grease bucket and should have kept it simple. There is a drawer style trap with a cover connecting to the rope seal underneath the grill. Thinking great idea? Not so much. Unless you want grease all over the ground where your grill sits. The rope seal traps all that grease and runs it along the top plate cover spilling it out the sides of the drawer. Take the Top plate off and you will be fine.

Although a great grill, it’s not the smoker the 780 Pro is. After 3 hours of smoking ribs at 180 degrees and using the super smoke setting as well, the ribs are no where near where they should be. Sort of a huge disappointment especially for their flagship smoker. I was looking forward to the super smoke setting to only be disappointed thus far. It just doesn’t put out smoke like the 780 on smoke setting. But the rest of the design is great, I am just not 100% happy making the switch, I’m sort of missing my 780 pro. Finding myself torn between the two and I shouldn’t feel this way for this kind of money. I believe I will just have to add more time to my smoke. Although, the WiFi feature is amazing, the insulation keeps the grill perfect and it does get to 500 degrees when needed. The height of the grill is perfect, I wish all Traeger’s were this way. Now, once I figure the smoking part down it’s a solid smoker/grill.

Great grill, need larger folding shelf

Had the Timberline 850 for about 2 weeks and used it 5 time now. Absolutely the best grill I have ever cooked on. Only really negative thing is that the front shelf is way to shallow. You cannot set anything on it with the lid closed. When trying to take meat off the grill you have to set your plate or pan on the side which really gives big opportunity to drop it on the ground. Why hasn't Traeger made an accessory folding front shelf that is deep enough for a plate or pan to set on with the lid closed?
