I like it, but have noticed where some improvement can be made.

My wife and I have wanted a touch less trash can for our kitchen for quite some time. We've been simplehuman users for nearly a decade and after using step cans for nearly the last 15 years we finally decided to try out the touch less can. We decided on this one after one: it was on sale, two: it was a good bit larger, three: it has a 5 year warranty, and four: simplehuman makes great products. So let’s go through all the features and what I think are important things to point out. So I love the verbal command feature. "Open Can" and it opens within a second or two. Then you can tell it to "Stay Open" and it will stay open until you tell it to close, otherwise it will close on its own or you can tell it to "Close Can" to close quicker. The motion sensor however is something I was expecting to be better. You have to waive your hand just right and at the right distance or it won't open. You have to get your hand pretty close sometimes and then most of the time my hand gets hit by the door opening which is against the point of a touch less trash can. I've noticed several reviews mentioning this, but it would have been so much better if the sensor would detect movement a bit farther away more consistently and sense faster movements. It will work at larger distances like at 8 inches, but you have to wave your and over the sensor a bit slower for it to see it and open. I love the quality of the simplehuman trash bags. They are so much stronger than standard garbage bags. The only downfall is the price. They can be as high as $.41 or so each unless you can buy in bulk and have a coupon. There are cheaper alternatives out there, but I really wish simplehuman would lower their price per bag to $.20 for everyday buyers and feel if they did this they would sell a lot more bags rather than people buying the lookalikes online for less. Another thing about this can and the size "Q" bag it takes is that it is huge when completely full. If you fill it up to the brim (which is what the point is right), it will be one heavy bag once you try to get it out to take to the dumpster or your can outside. The first time we changed bags I was like, “Wow this is heavy.” So if you don't have a good amount of strength you may want to keep that in mind when you buy this. Because it can get heavy if all the way full. Another thing is the stay open sensor. It is very sensitive and will definitely since your presence until you leave before it will close. It is even so sensitive that the other day it wouldn't close at all and we couldn’t figure it out until I went to wipe the sensor and felt a strand of my wife's hair on the sensor. Just that single strand of hair kept it from closing so keep that in mind if yours doesn’t want to close. Unless you have good eyesight or you inspect the sensor up close I wouldn't have guessed something that small would have caused it not to close, but once I removed it has worked great. Next is do you use a battery versus using the AC adapter. I prefer to use the battery only because I eliminate the potential of a power surge due to a lightning strike or another type of surge. I live in the South East and we get our fair share of lightning and will be using rechargeable batteries in mine just to be safe, plus it will give it a cleaner look and can move it around easier if needed. The only benefit I see of using the AC adapter other than not having to worry about batteries is that it may help you open the can easier when changing liners which I will touch on next. Lastly and this is the big one and really the most annoying part of the can after using it for about a week. It is a pain to first figure out how to change the liner without the door wanting to open up on you. I scoured the internet trying to find out how is the best way to open the can to not trigger the motion to open up the lid and potentially break something by forcing it open all the way to change the liner. I even called a rep at simplehuman who told me what to do, but his instructions still didn’t make me feel any better about it. I thought, let me try it without batteries and still the same issue. As I tried to open it from the bottom rim the lid would fall open and prevent the bottom rim to open all the way. So once that happened with the batteries out I thought, I’m going to open it with one hand on each side of the front corners and keep my fingers on the lid too and open it a bit quicker and what do you know it opened fine. I tried it a few more times with the batteries back in the unit and I think I figured it out. I would recommend though if you feel the lid wanting to open while you are doing it “DO NOT” force it closed. Let the actuator do its thing and try again. I can easily see a motor gear getting stripped or something breaking if you try to prevent the door from moving on its own. I really wish there was a button or sensor in the can that once the bottom rim started to open that the lid would stay closed until everything was closed completely. Again, I think I figured it out, but time will tell as I waited to write this review until I could figure out a way to change the liner safely without possibly damaging it. So all in all I’m happy with it and glad I purchased it. I do wish the instructions were better and there were some instructions included on how to correctly change the liner or better yet a video on YouTube or the simplehuman website to show you how to do it on the touch less can series. It is a very nice looking trash can and now I have fun throwing away trash. I hope this review helped you. Thanks!

In order to change the liners, simply lift the trim ring lid by hand. Triggering the sensor will not damage the can and the lid will not break if the trim ring is lifted while the lid is open.

Temperamental voice control
on June 1, 2020

At first, this sleek can worked wonderfully. I keep it right by me when prepping meals which makes the voice command not just convenient but necessary. After 2 months, it started getting fussy, only intermittently responding, refusing to "stay open", then was completely unresponsive to voice commands. Through 1 month of troubleshooting using the tips published online and directly from the customer service team, simplehuman sent a new one. I find it regularly needs to be plugged and unplugged to reset as it still stops responding to commands. When it works, it's wonderful. When it doesn't, it's frustrating and just an overpriced, pretty trash receptacle.

Awesome trash can!

This trash can is awesome. I had the step can before and upgraded to the 58 liter motion sensor can. I took it out of the very well wrapped box, plugged it in and said, “Open can,” and presto, it opened. It did not open when I just said open or when I just said can or anything else. It closes when I tell it to and stays open when I tell it to. I love this! It isn’t a trash can, it’s a work of art!

Christmas Gift

I have NOT opened the box. It is a Christmas gift. I ordered it because it kept being sold out. When I saw that it was in stock again, I thought I'd better order it because it may not be there in November.
Now, I need to order the replacer bags.

I love this trash can it really operates well, you can use other trash bags but it's a tight fit but simplehuman bags are too expensive for the amount they give you.

This Can + Me=️

Is it possible to fall in love with a garbage can? I didn’t think so until I bought this can....it’s handsome and smart and all my friends want one too! Quiet, doesn’t open too easily for a simple walk by or open to random words and the AC power adapter made it perfect for the space at the end of the counter. It replaced my old simplehuman step can and it holds SO much...the bag is convenient and strong that is also a simplehuman bag Q. Buy this can you won’t regret it!
