Where have all the Rubbermaid Totes gone?

I have bought a number of different size Rubbermaid containers over the years because they are the only ones that stand up to hauling them around and stacking them. Suddenly, they are no longer available. What is the deal. Please bring them back to local vendors, so they are readily available.

I have 58 totes in various sizes and i double love them and rubbermaid is the only brand i will buy. I had my whole house packed in rubbermaid totes for 2 years while i was over seas and i had no problem with mold or mildew after being in storage for 2 years. I would highly recommend to anyone moving or storing. I would love some in pink and green but cannot find in those colors?

The containers are sturdy and very durable. They do the job, but the lids pop off far too easily which can be extremely annoying and frustrating.

Don't Store Paperwork or Photos
on March 21, 2013

I did the one star to grab attention to an aspect of this product you should know about BEFORE you use it. This is a great storage box for many things, but DO NOT EVER store photographs, paperwork, clothing or anything that can absorb moisture. I used these for years to store stuff, and I thought it would protect from moisture. NOT SO.
Anywhere there is temperature change, heat or humidity, it will accumulate inside the box and cause mildew and rot. When I moved to a warmer climate, ruin! I had an entire collection of priceless (to me) family photographs ruined. They were stored in these boxes. A few years later, I wanted to go through them, and was shocked at the shape and smell of the interior. The negatives had melted together, the prints were mushy and moldy. It had never been subjected to moisture, ever. It was a very dry garage and an attic where they were kept. But over time, moisture and humidity and temp changes will collect and ruin anything you store inside if it's made of paper or photo paper or cloth.
I had another box full of old letters and paperwork RUINED and rotted by mildew. Some old vintage clothes, covered with mildew; some came out in the wash, some did not.
When the moisture accumulates inside, it doesn't leave. So. If you live in a stable climate like San Francisco or LA, maybe it's okay. If you live in Austin Texas, or the South, or New York City--all of which I have lived--do not use these boxes to store anything valuable over time.
Other than that, they are great for tons of stuff. If it can be washed, go ahead and store it. But anything else, please beware!

Thank you for taking the time to contact Rubbermaid regarding your product.

Our products are designed for household use and have not been tested for archival properties, so we do not recommend them for specific preservation applications. Most of our storage products considered for such functions are made from polyethylene, polypropylene or polystyrene, which contain no plasticizers (softeners). These materials can be identified by the molded recycle symbols 2, 4, 5 and 6. Archivists avoid plastics like PVS (vinyl) due to the presence of plasticizers and their potential to migrate. It should also be noted that gasses and water vapor can pass through the walls of plastic containers over time. Therefore, even a product with a very good lid seal cannot completely exclude them during years of storage.

Lids don't last
on November 14, 2017

I have been using roughneck totes for years, they are durable, stack well and with good lids they are almost impervious to the elements. But the lids do not hold up. They become brittle and crack and then no longer keep out water. I have a pile of cracked lids and a stack of totes that I can no longer use. I would be happy if I could buy replacement lids, even though the totes have a lifetime warranty, but lids do not seem to be available. So to keep using the totes I have, I have to buy new totes to get their lids.

Cracked while sitting in temp controlled storage

I have about ten of these containers in the 3-gal, 14-gal and 18-gal sizes. All of them have been stored in a climate controlled storage unit for about 5 years and every one of them have split of the lids have cracked. So much for the 10-year guarantee.
