Great Hub. Bad Cable
on March 25, 2021

So the HyperDrive GEN2 18-Port USB-C Hub is amazing. The build quality is super solid. The ports all work. I use daily from day one that I purchased it and can't do without it. I use mainly for my iPad Pro 11" as this gives me ALL the ports I need and more. I also purchased the 180W power adapter. It charges my iPad Pro and provides power to run all the hard-drives. There's a little heat going on, but nothing to be too alarmed about. So everything is great except that important thing you really need, the usb-c 10GB cable. It did not work at all, it kept disconnecting my drives, and the headphones kept cutting off. The the very least it was charging the iPad Pad the ports were useless. Went out and bough Apples Thunderbolt cable and voilà! It made everything work. So this could have been a 5 star, but because of the cable, it's a 3 star for me. Hope this review helps anyone who's looking for a solid good hub for your IPad or laptop.

Deceptive Descriptions

It says 100W for charging, but what they fail to mention is that it is not the Thunderbolt port that connects to the computer. That port maxes out at 60W. The usb-c PD 100W port does not carry the Thunderbolt video signal, and you can't connect the USB-C PD port to the same computer to get the added power. I was sitting working with my MacBook Pro 2020 16", running 2 Docker containers while plugged in and watching my battery drain down to 5%. Eventually my computer needed to be shut down to charge enough for me to use it again. I finally checked the System Information and there it was... the power from this hub was locked at 60W and the MBP 16" needs at least 85W.
The usb-c PD port is great if you need to charge an iPad while working on your computer, but don't count on a 16" MBP staying alive too long if you do any kind of processor intensive work. This ended up being a waste of money because I had to buy a hub that ACTUALLY gave 96w downstream to my computer.

Great Performance

I have two docks, one for work and this one at home. This is vastly superior. It powers everything, runs four screens (including the laptop screen), and seems to make everything run faster/smoother.

I have just set it up to my computer and I must say it works wonderfully with no problems at all and allows me to use more items connected to my Mac at the same time.

Works great overall

I haven't used other docking stations before, but this does all what I need it to do and haven't used all the features yet. I've had a few times, but not often, where my extended screen has shown an error message with a blue background, while my chromebook remains functionable when waking from a sleeping state. I've been able to remove the USB-C and re-insert it, to rectify the issue. Not sure if this is a chromebook issue or an issue with the docking station. This works great overall.

Everyone needs one of these

So I use my 2019 Macbook pro 16" for work and for gaming and I've got to say that this thing has vastly changed my workflow and gaming. Being able to fully charge my MacBook while plugging in different peripherals has allowed me to plug in the essentials like gaming mouse and monitor directly into my MacBook, hence reducing latency. This thing is a must have for everyone.

Not worth it

This is such a frustrating hub to use. No consistency in when it will provide power via USB-C, or when USB-A ports will work, whether sound will transmit to external speakers, or whether signals will pass through the HDMI ports. The only port that seems to work consistently is the USB QC port, but it's a lot of money to spend for a USB charger. I am incredibly frustrated with this purchase.

Very disappointed!

First, it came without a power chord. Who does that? Next, it won't handle dual screens with my MacBook (no, it's not an MST issue because my Kensington does this). With one display plugged into the display port and another in the HDMI, I just get one screen duplicated. My Kensington unit gives me two displays. Finally, my laptop is constantly rejecting the power coming in from the unit so I have to plug my laptop in via the OEM power chord, otherwise my laptop will die without warning (because it THINKS it's plugged in). I've very disappointed in this unit. I had such high hopes. It was just wasted money.
