Wood splitting

I’ve assembled hundreds of pieces of furniture and build my own wood furniture and know not to tighten screws until a piece is fully assembled and not to over tighten wooden pieces. However, while assembling the table some of the wood started to split after just a few turns of the screw. One part in particular started to split significantly. While removing the screw (to repair the split) the wood broke into several pieces which I repaired with wood glue. Lastly, the pre drilled holes for the latches are spaced too fare apart on either side of the table top piece, preventing the latch from closing. Otherwise, I like the design, functionality and color of the wood.

This table is awesome, especially for the price. It was easy to assemble, despite some unclear spots in the instructions and I was able to do it without anyone’s help. We will see how it holds up.
