Easy to use.

Believe it or not I tried the online version first. Didn't like it, felt strange using it. Went back to the CD version I've used for years and felt comfortable. It's so easy to use and ask all the questions. Now if I could only get money back instead of paying since being retired!!
Pros: Easy to install, Easy to fix issues, Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import, Fast
I would recommend this to a friend!

Really bad at multi-state returns; plenty of bugs
on February 6, 2018

I thought I would give H&R Block another try for 2017 after a miserable experience with it in 2016. I should not have. It handles multi-state returns extremely poorly. For starters, because the Federal+State program is available on Amazon at a discount, the cost of the second state (not available on Amazon) is nearly THREE TIMES as much as the entire Federal+State bundle. Secondly, while e-file in New York is free, the e-file fee for other states is, again, more than the initial cost for the software. Because, presumably, Non-Residents forms not getting the same scrutiny as regular forms, the Non-Resident return for my second state was full of bugs (like an entire page that refused to print, numbers not being rounded properly, and at least one line-item appearing on the wrong page. Many of the more esoteric topics require the user to read the IRS or state instructions, figure out what to enter on her own, and then type the result in (e.g. adjustments to one state's income on another state's form are done entirely manually, by the user figuring out how much needs to be subtracted or added from the program's initial guess at the amount, which at least it tells you is not the correct amount). Most disturbing of all, none of the information from the first (non-resident) state was automatically imported to the second (resident) state; the program asks you to type everything in again manually -- things it should know, like how much your tax is in the other state and how much your refund is for the other state -- and you can't look at those pages of one state's form while filling in the other state's interview. You have to stop what you're doing, open the form in a separate windows, write down the information, close the other window, and type the information back in. That's not the way it should work. I know most users don't need to file in two states, but for those who do, the software is not well suited.
Pros: Easy to install, Easy to import
Cons: Time consuming, Hard to fix issues, Hard to prepare
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Terrible outdated UI
on February 7, 2018
Posted by: mrose13
The free online version had more advanced features than the paid-for Windows app. There's no uploading from PDFs. The UI hasn't changed a single pixel in years and navigating between forms is awful.
Cons: Time consuming, Hard to fix issues, Hard to prepare, Hard to import
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Program Confuses "Main" Taxpayer
on February 7, 2018

When comparing separate versus joint returns, the program assigns taxpayers DIV and INT income to spouse. The program also did not "deduct" real estate and personal property (vehicle) taxes.

E-file rejected for 'invalid' RTN
on February 7, 2018
Posted by: Bruguru
The program itself is easy to use and accurate, however, my return is always rejected due to an invalid routing number. I verified the number with my bank and re-entered it several times, but the return is always rejected.
Pros: Easy to install, Easy to prepare, Easy to import, Fast
Cons: Hard to fix issues
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
