CA540 State Program Poor - Pass on Product

While I thought that the Federal return portion of the package was adequate, I was really very disappointed in the CA state tax program, that I had to pay a lot of money for in terms of the extra program, and also for efiling the CA state return. I was disappointed when the interview process on CA AMT and other adjustments basically said, "Go read this IRS publication", and figure it out yourself. WHAT DID I JUST PAY H&R Block to do. Completely unacceptable approach, at too high a cost, with too high an efile charge. Next year I am buying the competing product. Plus, even on "gimme" stuff, it made errors. It flagged as an error that a W2 (from a state institution) had no state tax withholding. It was not an error, nor did the program provide a way to mark that issue as "handled" once I had to check it once. Just frankly annoying.
Cons: Time consuming, Doesn't maximize refund, Hard to fix issues

Charged me twice for State download.

Stated I could save money by purchasing state download with product purchase, so I did. Then was charged full price for state again. Q and A section said I would be refunded the extra $21.05 within 10 working days, that did not happen. Time to notify the BBB I guess.
Cons: Hard to fix issues

This program had bugs

I had to enter my 1099-Bs four different times before the program saved them in the federal form. It did not enter any of this from the PA worksheets on 1099-B sales and thus omitted a lot of income from the tax calculation. I had to redo by hand the first 2 pages of PA-40.
Pros: Easy to install
Cons: Hard to fix issues
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I sold a business and had 15 entries to 4797; program only allowed 12. I had to consolidate 3 entries and while all 12 entries were included in calculation the program only printed 4 entries for federal return. Printing on returns is so light it is hardly readable. The Arkansas Part year return was unusable, no way to allocate between Ark items non-Ark items. Must easier to do it by hand.
Cons: Time consuming

I have used H&R Block several times before, this time (2017) the program was easy to follow although not sure you included my NC state payment made for 2016 taxes in 2017 deductions. My major problem came when I finished the program and went to the file page. I got the message could not file because the IRS was not ready to send out the required up-dates. I did get a prompt to download updates but when I tried I got the message program was a read only. Strangely enough after several tries and a call to you customer service the updates magically appeared on my screen and I was able to file my return. I would suggest you not send out your product until it is ready to accomplish the objective.....filr your tax with the IRS.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Fast
Cons: Time consuming, Hard to fix issues

Can’t download state forms

Federal return okay. But won’t let me download state. Just tells me I have to buy it so I did and now I cannot cancel order and still can’t download. Need refund
