I have used the H&R Block Premium tax prep programs to complete my tax returns for the past 20+ years. I have found it to be easy to use. I like that it follows up with an accuracy review to catch my errors.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents, Fast
More gotcha corners than I would like. Less comprehensive search capacity than I would like. (How do I adjust my clergy housing allowance income? Search needs to include worksheets as well as forms and Help section! Chat support was useless on this question.). Systematic, thorough, helpful in getting the job done. Just some irritations that need attention.
Several bugs in program. After printing return in PDF format was unable to print paper copy of acceptance sheet except in PDF. To resolve, had to go back and print return as paper to get program to switch back to my printer instead of PDF.
If you gather all your receipts and income forms first, it is a quick process. The best part is using the same form year after year so it imports all your info from last year.
I would recommend the H&R block software only because we have little choice in the matter. The US tax code is unnecessarily complicated and companies like this work hard to keep it this way. Why do they do this? So we have little choice but to buy their software. The software is good, easy to use and works for all the wrong reasons.
