fun up until you actually drive it

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Lego Technics is the more advanced specialized Legos and this kit was pretty fun to build. If you are a fan of the 80's style RC car look, you'll be glad to see this little homage to that era. The actual build was pretty fun, as my kid enjoyed it, and I enjoyed seeing this, as I never really built this type of RC car back in the day myself. I was happy to see it finally assembled and pretty excited to see it go!
6 batteries and 1 app download later, we started it up and off it went. Pretty fast little bugger too! But sadly, the app is so very bad that it doesn't control the car very well. It has one of those elementary virtual joysticks on the app and one stick controls and speed and steering. Why couldn't they mimic the controls of the 80s as well?? you know, with one controller for the speed and another controller for steering.
Because of the lack of precision, my kid grew frustrated pretty easily and was done with it pretty quickly. I was disappointed because this thing is not cheap. So I took over and.....yeaaa...this kinda sucks. It's so hard to control that is doesn't align with the high quality build in this Technics line. The controls seem sooo simple, like what younger kids use for their little tyke-mobiles.
This had soo much potential for the coolness and nostalgia factor, but the controls fell completely flat and totally bring this product down. Sadly, I might just remove the batteries and save them for something else, and put this on the shelf as an expensive toy piece until someone tells me that the app is much better.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Hi there. We're sorry to hear of your disappointment. Our suggestion to help with the controls for this speedy model is to make smaller more controlled movements with the virtual joystick. Hopefully this will help with the stability and get you back to performing jumps and tricks again!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I got this for my son for Christmas he was very excited. It took us about 3 hrs to put together so being a 10 year old he got very impatient. There was alot of tiny pieces and the directions were somewhat easy for me to understand but for my 10 year old son it was kind of difficult for him to understand. I did have to put most of it together. The pieces did snapp together very easy and if you put the wrong piece on it was easy to unsnap and fix it. It was very easy to set up once you got it put together. You just download the app and turn the Bluetooth on and let it sync. It is hard to steer its very touchy. It is neat cause it tells you the speed and the incline which makes it very neat. If you hit the car off somthing though the piece the holds the wheel on likes to keep popping off so this is a car that you have to be very gentle with. Other than that my son loves it.

Good build, awful controls

I hate to leave a bad review but the horrible app controls for this basically render it a paperweight. The single "joystick" that controls left/right/forward/reverse is extremely difficult to use and not enjoyable in the least. If LEGO is going to go down the path of making RC cars (which I think is a REALLY good idea, to be sure) they need to offer a physical controller. Or perhaps figure out how to use the smart phone's accelerometer and gyroscope? I really hope an update to the controls are on their way.

We listen carefully to the feedback we get from our all fans, so hearing your thoughts will be super helpful for our designers when they’re coming up with new sets. If you're having trouble with the controls for this model we would suggest making smaller, more precise movements with the virtual joystick to help maneuver the buggy.

This build is amazing except for the part where it cannot be run with a real remote. It requires you to own a cell phone or device of the sort to run the car and without it its just another set not a powered set. Its extremely disappointing because instead of sending out controllers it feels like they are trying to save money by making us use the app. for a "only the best is good enough" company, this certainly isn't the best.

We’re sorry to hear you were disappointed and we appreciate your feedback. We’re always looking to explore new ways to play and the app makes for experiences not possible with a physical remote. You'll still find sets and hubs that work with the Powered Up 88010 Remote Control right on our website.

Fun, but intrusive, controls okay.

This buggy is fun little build, and okay to use. It moves faster than I expected, so that is a plus.
The app is required and it requires a GPS location to play. Lego doesn't need to know where I am using their products.
The control set-up in the app is a single, left, joystick. This makes it hard to stay in the center of the control interface. I would rather have left and right joysticks, or optional default controls. I will be using a different app going forward.
Everything else is on par. I would rate five stars if there was a stand alone controller option.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Hi there. Good to hear you're having fun with this set. Location services is not for GPS tracking, it's to enable your device to display a signal for where it's located in proximity to the model in order to control via Bluetooth. If you're having trouble with the controls, we would suggest smaller movements with the virtual joystick, especially when turning left / right.

This was 1) my first technic set in a long time and 2) my first motorized set. And it was so fun!! Technic has come so far. I put it together with my 6 year old and it was so fun talking about what all the special little parts did (motor, shocks, etc). The set itself is awesome, but then you get to drive the thing around! Steering takes a bit getting used to but it’s still fun, just don’t expect like a full on RC car and you won’t be disappointed. Anyway, if you’re on the fence, I think it’s a great value and tons of fun.

Motor issues

My husband and I bought this kit our 14 year old and he was so excited to receive it for his birthday. However once he finished put it all together not he was not so happy anymore because he was having motor issues. He took it apart to see if he did something wrong but after the 2nd try he still had the same issues with the motor and the wheels not working. We paid so much for this kit and my son was very disappointed.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] It is always fun putting LEGO's together and this one was no different. I would say this took at least a few hours to put together with a lot of instruction checking, but overall it was pretty easy to follow the steps. The pieces were easy to put together and take apart as needed. Once the buggy was all finished, setting up the Bluetooth was simple and pretty quick to complete. I really enjoy how you can control this buggy with your phone but I will say that it is a little bit difficult to control the car itself, maybe it will take some more practice to get used to it. Overall, this is a fun project to work on and then play with once it is completed
