There are many places where you won't be able to edit after you input, and you have to start all over again. I hate the very first step asking you to register, the place asking you to buy defense and signup for TurboTax Advantage. It should get rid of lots of unnecessary questions , add more logic and details. Even on this very page, it asks you lots of things no one wants to waste time on selecting from dropdown selection boxes.

TurboTax's rabbit holes and failures
on May 17, 2021

If there was an alternative that was affordable, we would be all over it. Especially with the pandemic, finding an affordable accountant is next to impossible. So, we are using TurboTax for the second year. It's okay. Not great, doesn't suck. Too many rabbit holes and not enough advice. E-filing took our money for filing fee, but doesn't work. Our guess is the IRS is so behind on everything due to staff shortages and, well, the pandemic, doesn't have updated 2019 numbers. Augh...

TurboTax 2020 Home & Business had real limitations
on May 17, 2021
Posted by: Really Hostile
I have used TurboTax products, both business and personal, for at least 20 years. I have always found the products to be helpful and (mostly) user friendly. This year, however, I had real issues with Home & Business. First, I ABSOLUTELY HATE the fact that Intuit has decided for me what type and version of computer operating system I must have to even be able to install the product. I abhor Windows 10 and deeply resent the fact that Intuit would not install on my Windows 7 system. I am not a child and do not need Intuit deciding for me what type of computer system I need to run TT. As I suspect Intuit would argue that requiring an operating system still covered by manufacturer's support is reasonable for them as this is the only way it can ensure the safety of my taxes for e-filing, then the software should support a method that allows me to install on an operating system I like to use and limit my filing option to mail-in only. To be able to install TT for the 2 S-corps and 1 LLC businesses I run (TT for Business) and my own personal returns (TT Home & Business), I had to purchase a laptop with a Windows 10 operating system that is dedicated solely to make Intuit happy so I can prepare taxes. Also, I would have preferred to purchase a Mac rather than a Windows system for this purpose, but TT for Business is ONLY made to operate on a Windows system. This is NOT helpful, because I am moving my businesses away from Windows software -- because of the awful, non-business friendly changes Windows has made in its systems and the absurd focus on social media, movie streaming, game playing, and other nonsense that is blossoming in Windows 10. I am ready to move to Quickbooks for Mac for the businesses. How does the fact that I can only process my business tax returns, and would otherwise have those interface with my Quickbooks, help me with this absurd limitation?
Additionally, this year the TT software refused to accept Section 199A information -- despite it being entered -- and kept returning an error that could not be corrected. I visited the TT help site, which instructed me to try a work around, and if that did not work, to simply ignore the error and move on. As this error could not be corrected, however, the fact that the return had an error kept booting me back to the "correct this error" final check review (that could not be corrected) and prevented me from being able to e-file. Accordingly, to be able to e-file, I had to entirely remove the Section 199A deductions from the return, or I could file by mail. This was absolutely maddening.
Lastly, I helped a relative who installed her Home & Business software on an Apple Mac OS system to complete her return. (I had never used it on a Mac before.) The TT software for Mac is less user-friendly and more picky than the Windows version. It's drop-down menu options are more limited and it does not feel native for the system at all. It also warned that it would not be capable of being loaded on the High Sierra OS version next year and that she would have to upgrade to Catalina -- on which several of her necessary programs will not operate as they are not 64x bit programs. (Hence, another episode of Intuit forcing people into software upgrades that are not helpful for its users.) There was no option to allow for updates at her convenience as in the Windows version, and every time she opened the software, it would automatically update; which was time-consuming and annoying.
When done, she initially thought she would e-file both her Federal and State returns. After seeing the disclosures she was required to agree to -- that allowed Intuit to share her tax information -- she changed her mind and decided to mail-in her state return. However, the TT software would not accept this change -- although it gave her the option to change to mail-in -- the software kept insisting that she agree to the state e-file requirements and would not allow her to print out her state return for filing. Because the Windows version allows one to select "print for filing" or "print for records" at any time, I incorrectly assumed the Mac version would too, so I had not saved the PDF "for filing" version immediately before trying to efile. So, when we tried to go back to "print for filing" for the state return, it would only allow us to see the document, but not print it or save it so we could capture the return in a PDF and print from there. Eventually we found a work around and managed to print her return for filing, but it was not easy, took considerable time, and reinforced how angry I was with Intuit

Many Problems
on May 17, 2021
Posted by: Light15fermi
The 2020 Home and Business program featured the usual ease of use for data entry. When I attempted to load it on a desktop with Win 7 Pro it refused to load saying it was not secure. I grabbed a lap top running Win 10 and it loaded and ran. When I printed my return to file 43 pages, the printer produced large blacked out areas across the forms. I save my files on a server and I went back to the desktop it wouldn't allow me to use and opened the PDF versions and reprinted the returns. The other problem I enjoyed was I tried to open my 2019 return and the program asked for the installation key. This was on the same computer I had installed the 2019 software on. The obsessions' with security, theirs and others, is a major issue. Not at all impressed.
Pros: I bought or sold investments
