TurboTax sucks, worst experience ever
on May 16, 2021

I've used TurboTax for the past 10 years, and this is the first time it consistently crashes. Cannot save the work. Had to redo my taxes 3 times, and hit the save button after every entry. Very slow. If I don't do this, and it tries to save by itself, it crashes and I lose all my work.

Peer Review of TurboTax
on May 16, 2021

TurboTax is a very thorough program and is relatively easy to understand and use, however it is slow, uses a large amount of system resources, RAM memory and is cumbersome to electronically file due to having to sign in multiple times to Intuit to access the IRS system. The program has good explainations in the help topic and overall I would rate it a 7 out of 10.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Please fix the activation bug!
on May 16, 2021
Posted by: Got Hung up on Activation
After the installation, it got stuck at the activation screen. Turns out it was because I downloaded it into my new computer (bought just a month ago). So disappointing, I use to love TurboTax, but this is unacceptable. I had to look at various chat threads to find a workaround. Very upsetting.

Where are the benefits to maximize savings?

Sure I get it the formulas are correct. And I bet it covers the questions. But does this locate every way we can soundly reduce taxes? I don't get that feeling. And I don't get that feeling even with their "comfy" statements they're maximizing our returns. It'd be nice to see some observations in the program that then realize a reduction on that balance bar.

Problem with Education Expenses
on May 16, 2021
Posted by: Rick068
I have used Turbo Tax for many years, and appreciate the product. I have encountered a problem the last 2 years. When documenting tuition expenses for a Qualified Tuition Plan, the expenses reported on the 1098-T are reduced by $10,000 for funds used for Credits, namely the American Opportunity Credit and the Lifetime Learning Credit. However, my income exceeds the thresholds for these credits, so I am not eligible for these credits. The result was that some of my education expenses were disallowed, which then had my gains on my 529 plan withdrawl taxed. It took a careful review of the forms to see that this occured, and took me some time to figure out what was happening and how to resolve it. I needed to manually zero the Funds Used for Credit line in the Student Information Worksheet. I think that most TurboTax users would not find this error, and it can be an expensive mistake. This seems to be a bug within TurboTax and should be remedied.
