Misleading Marketing and Overly Restrictive Forms

We specifically switched from a less expensive software to turbotax because marketing materials indicated that a married couple living separately and filing joint federal with separate state returns was possible using the software. It was a mess. We had to fill out three separate federal returns and state returns, then file on paper because the system can't distinguish between individual income for joint federal filers for the purposes of state forms and the forms are locked down to prevent hand editing to correct them. Additionally, freelance income and 1099-misc income generates additional irrelevant business forms with no mechanism to delete them, and 1099-NEC doesn't generate properly at all. The last of the three is a bug turbotax is aware of but has not fixed, requiring a search, deletion of forms, and accessing external links to correct. What normally takes us around 2 hours using other software has taken us 5 and counting, and we now have to file on paper, likely making us late this year. So, we've spent more money, wasted more time, and had considerably more aggravation using Turbotax, with worse outcomes. Would not recommend to anyone.

Filed my personal return and 2 businesses this year and was much, much easier as expected. I feel that I didn't miss any deductions and even though I owed a small amount this year, I feel more secure with TurboTax than a tax preparer that I covered all bases with my taxes!
Pros: My employment status changed this year, I bought or sold investments

I have used many Turbo Tax products for MANY years, as my circumstances have changed over time: from the simplest Individual to the complex Home and Business, and have never been disappointed in the way they seem to learn the areas where users could be better helped. They improve every year, and I still don't know how that's possible. The frequent updates; the additional helps that are there but not distracting; the options for additional support outside the process, where you stop and study what your situation is before continuing. They obviously pay great attention to the quirks in the tax law EVERY YEAR and try to simplify explanations without becoming overwhelming. Thanks!!

TURBOTAX MAKES DOING MY RETURN EASY

I USE TURBOTAX TO FILE A PERSONAL AND MULTI-BUSINESS RETURN. I HAVE USED IT FOR MANY YEARS BECAUSE IT ALLOWS ME TO EASILY ENTER MY DATA. IT IS THOROUGH ENOUGH THAT IT FOUND WAYS TO REDUCE MY TAXES BY UTILIZING NEW CHANGES TO THE TAX LAW. IT SHOWED ME CREDITS THAT I KNEW NOTHING ABOUT.
