A solid improvement over EV3

Bought for a project. I bought the yellow version of the hub, but its EXACTLY the same as the Turkoise one. The microprocessor is very powerful and uses Micropython, which is great for someone with programing experience. The code blocks are not bad either. To the haters: code block style of coding can guarantee program correctness in more advanced situations, so don't dismiss the idea too quickly. Its kinda like functional programming. The actual processor has sensors(accelerometers) that can tell yaw, pitch, etc. It works very well. The only drawback: the cables cannot be extended. It has 4 motors of sufficient strength but you can also use the motors from Control+. For example, I bought several large angular motors that came in the Volvo Hauler and they work with the hub. The app for both iOS and Mac OS are both really well made. I highly recommend them

No Daisy Chaining

I’ve always been pretty interested in robotics. I remember playing with lego ever since I was a kid. When the ev3 came out, I was in my early 20s; I thought it was really awesome how you could create robots with lego and daisy chain up to 4 ev3 computers to make some incredible robots. I used to create some really cool robots in my spare time. I purchased the new robot inventor set for my 7 year old son, since I wanted him to have an interest in robotics like me. I was pretty frustrated when I found out there’s no way to daisy chain the new robot inventor system with other robot inventor computers. You’re limited to just 6 ports, and you cannot build bigger and better robots. I simply do not understand why the new system removed the daisy chaining functionality. The new system is pretty much worse than my older ev3.

This is a poor third shot at this style of robotics for Lego. The one that came before is superior and still lacking in instruction etc. I do not believe you get any 'bang for the $' with this one. Among the many complaints I have one that stands out for all considering it, is the lack between any action either programmed or by remote operation so it constantly mis-performs and runs into everything. Sad.

Good set

Good set except for the limited ports and pieces. it would also be nice if a pressure sensor could be included or at least be bought separately. the biggest drawback is only having six ports for sensors

Disappointed

I got back into Lego in January 2020 after a 40+ year hiatus, needed a zero impact hobby due to shoulder damage. I waited for this to be released as I wanted the latest version of Mindstorms, since EV3 was 7 years old. My kit is enroute as of this review (12/2020). After I ordered the kit, I learned this is very inferior to EV3:
* Less powerful processor * Less memory * Non replaceable cables * Lack of daisy chaining (multiple hub connections) * Proprietary connectors (just like Apple)
and many other lacking items which have been discussed online.
The only difference between this and Spike Prime are the color scheme and parts included. It is sad that BOTH sets are designed primarily for kids, and Lego completely ignored AFOLs. There are many EV3 creations that could not be built using this hub due to its inferior design.
I'm sure it will be fun for a little while since I've never coded before, but things I was hoping to eventually build will not happen with this set :(

Limited features

I originally purchased this as I wanted to have a new Mindstorms set. My first set was the RTX series. I would say that the big things that are keeping me from giving this a good rating is lack of expansion parts and hidden features. I know from my electronics knowledge that the light sensor can detect ambient light (though there is no option to do so). I also feel that I should decide when to turn on/off the external LED's of the color sensor also "no option". A "internal" sensor block for reading battery life/voltage not available... A block to use the force sensor used in the Spike prime set not found. In the end it is the features I know it has that are blocked or just simply not added that frustrate me the most. It's fun, but it could be a lot better with just some simple adds.
+ rechargeable battery + smaller hub + large part count + variable creation + large sound library
- hidden features - no expansion parts - fixed cables - long charge time

I actually have 2 of Lego Mindstorm. And I think it is very good set to buy. Because you can make a big robot with 2sets.

Could Have Mentioned..New motor connectors
on December 21, 2020

I purchased this for a Christmas present for my son, so there is no building time yet. However, after making many calls to several Lego stores trying to figure out what kind of connectors the electronics use, I was told they were the same as the Technic sets. This is not the case, and is not made obvious in any pics or advertisements. Even employees did not know. Hopefully it is awesome, because I was getting it anyway. Just seems like an intentionally omitted detail (to be polite). Ugh, Just wish I knew earlier, not a deal breaker, I am sure he will love it. Time to start a new electronics bin. Happy Holidays

Hmm, we're sorry you didn't receive the info you were seeking! LEGO® Technic™ sets and LEGO® MINDSTORMS® sets are two separate themes and operate with different systems. The new Robot Inventor set includes all hubs, motors and connectors you could need for endless play and building possibilities! If you'd like to speak to one of our LEGO experts, you can get in touch with us at LEGO.build/Service-BV.
