Ship in a bottle

Bought this for my husband for Valentine's Day...he said it was a really fun build, and I actually think it is a really cool design. the compass, the globes, the bottle stopper...the details are great basically. Would have ordered 2 but said limit one...great job designer. ^_^
First build the ship. It is harder than it looks with a lot of intricate pieces. I got distracted and left out a couple of pieces which we all have done. But once back on track, I focused and got it done. After the ship build came the bottle. There are many small pieces which need to fit just right to put this together. It is time consuming but the reward is the finished product. It is a fantastic build. I would highly recommend this set.
This was a fun build, not too challenging. The main problem with this set is all of the clear pieces. I knew that as with other sets that the clear pieces would have some scratches but they are very noticeable because of how big the clear parts are. I wish that the clear parts for all sets would have better packaging.
I am glad that LEGO printed the parts for this kit as compared to other kits that have decals. Especially for this price (Why can't the more expensive kits have printed parts instead of decals?).
Overall, I had fun with this build. It's really neat to look at, but there is virtually no 'playability' here. The 2 globes spin (whee!) and the compass hand twirls.
Where this set fails and why I cannot recommend it to friends and family is the fact that the bottle parts came out of the box looking scratched and dirty! Some parts I was able to clean with a little soap and water, but some are definitely scratched. This is disappointing. Also, a handful of the clear bricks that make up the bottom of the bottle weren't crystal clear. In fact, I'd describe them as 'yellowing'. This is very apparent when you spread all the parts out on a white surface...you can literally sort out the 'iffy' ones.
a comment on the building.... i built the bottle part FIRST, then the stand and THEN the ship....
the stand was a VERY interesting build......
the bottle was a little difficult, as i had to get the orientation or the "window" parts correct...
lastly - the ship is very cute, but i had a LOT of problems with the sails..... they kept slipping down and wiggling around...and then i had put something in the wrong place and the sails kept hitting the bottle and the boat wouldn't fit...so i had to figure THAT out....
if it wasn't for the price - i would have purchased two - one for home and one for the office!
all in all - a really nice show piece - but kinda fragile!
I was a bit hesitant to get this at first because the build seemed too simplistic and the cost felt steep but I was wrong. So many intricate pieces and the design was more challenging than expected. Looks so nice when completed and makes a great showpiece on my bookshelf next to my other favorite Ideas build, the Old Fishing Store. Kudos to the original designer for such an original and thoughtful creation!!
This is a great build and display piece; perfect for fans of the Lego Ideas, ship fans, or those who enjoy bottles. I am getting back into LEGO as an adult and this was the perfect set; I loved ships in a bottle as a kid and building them with my dad. It’s challenging especially the base of the bottle. The finished product exceeds expectations and will be a great display and conversation piece at my desk. Can’t wait for my next Ideas purchase.
