Utter trash

Never worked right from the start. Great item if your in a pinch, but only if it works. Lifeless straw is more like it.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Hard to use

I have used this on two ridge hikes in Alaska, and will now be looking elsewhere for water filtration. We have amazingly clear water in the Alpines, but that didn't equate into easy filtration using this straw. It is so hard to suck, that my palate is sore after using it for only a few minutes. With the water flow so constricted by the filtration, you will have to add an hour onto your hike for each time you stop to use this device.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

We tested the two we bought and they worked fine. We are leaving soon on a trip to the Middle East where we were worried that water sources in remote areas might be sketchy. We're packing our LifeStraws and looking forward to using them to give us peace of mind when we are drinking from questionable water sources.

Worked great!

I went on my first backpacking trip (solo) and had two ways to filter water, of course. On my way to the car, I was out of water and only had about a mile to go. Getting thirsty on a hot day, I thought I'd try my LifeStraw. I took a few sips out of the creek which kept me hydrated until I finished the last half mile to my car. It was easy to use.
I do have one question though. It says to stand it in clean water for 20 seconds before using it or when dry. This isn't practical and doesn't make sense since people usually need it when they don't have any clean water. I didn't do that and just noticed this instruction as I'm looking at what I'm to do to clean it now that I'm home.
I drank the water and I'm fine. Just wanting to understand that comment better.

The filter does not need to be primed in safe water. It can be primed in any body of water you will be drinking from as long as it does not get on the mouthpiece.

Mine don't work

I was given two as gifts during the Holidays and was planning on using one during a long run in the Colorado Mountains. One was used a few times before and the other was never used. Now, neither of them work. I would not recommend that these be used as a primary source of clean water. If they work, they are very convenient for sure. But would not recommend these being used is a sole or primary water source. Always bring a back up filter or water source, one you know is reliable.
