Different and Fun Build
on August 24, 2020
Posted by: LEGOPHD
I have built all the various versions of the Iron Man Hulkbuster that LEGO has offered, so when I saw this one, I knew I had to have it. It will be the perfect backdrop for the set already in my collection. This is a finger/thumb numbing project, dealing with all the single dots, but the instructions are very clear. I sorted out all the colors into separate bags, numbered them, and set off building. Unfortunately, I was missing several of a single color, but the good folks at customer service got them to me within a week, so I could complete the build. I would highly recommend this to any builder who is looking for something new to try.

Great Possibilities!

This was a really great new set from LEGO. I bought it simply for the pieces and frame and made my own picture out of the pieces instead of Iron Man. The colors were very useful for custom designing and overall it was a wonderful experience. I would recommend this set whether you like Iron Man or not, just for the experience of making a picture out of LEGO pieces, especially for custom building. I am, personally, going to buy a couple more of this set and make more custom pictures. Thank you to whoever thought to make this a line of sets, I'm looking forward to future sets from this line!

only buy if you truly do not mind small pieces

Overall, it is a great set I just think it isn’t for me. It’s not that I’m not used to high piece sets, in fact I’ve purchased many that are close to 2k pieces. I find the difficulty so much that I just left it in the bin. I feel if you like jigsaw puzzles and paint by numbers or lite brite sets, this is an excellent choice.
I love sets like the LEGO expert, architecture, and ideas series so, it’s sad to see a miss for me. I’m sure I’ll complete it someday, not every set can be a winner.

This was bought for me to build for my dad, who is a big marvel fan. He didn't have the time to build it so he asked me to. I spend 2 weeks building it, expecting to bring it back completed in the box. However, the box is slightly too slim to fit the portrait. I feel shocked and betrayed, as it would have been so satisfying to slide it into the box and carry it under my arm proud of my work. But here we are, disappointed and bitter. I don't understand why LEGO couldn't make the box large enough to fit the portrait. Other than that, I had a decent time while building the set and enjoy the end product.

It was really cool to build. As an artist trying to learn pixel art, this was a really good start. 10/10

The End Result is Worth it

I enjoyed the Iron Man mosaic; it was my first 2-D effort in Lego. The price I felt was a bit high for the part count and the fact that you are really limited to these three images without buying more sets. Helpful tips: get yourself a plastic, 12-chambered box meant for small hardware to sort the pieces and keep them segregated while you work. You can label each chamber with its corresponding number; this really speeds the process. Also, you might want to use a rubber thimble. Pressing on all those studs for hours at a time will numb your fingertips, and it may take a day or two to regain the feeling! I like the display, but I wish they had kept the parts consistent between these and the Beatles (which are flat-top studs), so you could put them together for something unique. I would also be interested if Lego were to make available a "digitizing" program that could render any photo in Lego-color studs, to add re-build options.

A great piece of wall candy

I picked up 3 for the ultimate build, so my comments are along those lines. The finished product looks spectacular. I do have a few gripes about the build process though.
The PDF instructions, I wish they had a higher quality. Towards the end of the build, when working on the frame, zooming in on some of the pieces was blurry. However I was able to figure it out.
My biggest gripe: I was 21 studs short on the dark red. I attempted to submit a missing brick request, however it was auto-declined due to quantity. I tried calling in my request, only to be subjected to hold music for over an hour before I gave up. I emailed, but I'm sure Lego has a significant backlog. So I accepted my fate and ordered the missing parts out of pocket. The cost was extremely minimal - but there's a principle of the thing here that just wasn't cool.
The build itself once done is very flexible. Trying to hang it on the wall was slightly frustrating just due to the 3 connection points, and my screws knocked off a few legos when attempting to hang. But, measure the distance between holes, mark your spots, and you'll get it.
Some suggestions, but by no means big deals: It'd have been nice if Lego could have included a mounting diagram or template for easy wall mounting. Also I kind of wish each instruction page would include how many studs were included in that step. Not necessary, but it'd help keep me honest when I'm debating if I got every color in the correct amount. Also, maybe a number grid on the sides so I wasn't counting how many down and over all the time.
I'm looking forward to the ultimate Vader and what designs come next. It'd be super cool if someone could design a program that took any picture and "converted" it into a stud layout.
