A great addition to the Technics line
on September 15, 2020

This was a fun build and the LEGO engineers are getting better at adding fun features to their Technics line. There are lots of details here such as the opening hood that shows heo Volvo engine in action. The technology that went into this model is incredible, the shear number of gears is amazing and the way that it all gradually goes together is a marvel to observe. As with any of these more advanced Technics models, be very careful as you construct it. Step 1 in this build has a lot of gears and if you do one thing wrong, it can be a real mess. At one stage, I missed that there were three red idler gears and I only put in one. When I finished stage 1, I had two gears remaining and I knew that could not be right. I went back and inspected and I found the error. It took 90 minutes to pull down and re-construct the model correctly. Step 3 is hard. Lots of small pieces and the parts that you would assume would be in the same bag are often not - so lots of searching through small pieces. The remote control through one's smartphone is really cool. The only drawback there is that the tutorial is a bit confusing to get through, but one you get through it, the truck has great remote control features - forwards and backwards in different gears steering and dumping. Kids will love playing with it. A wonderful build - just follow the instructions carefully.

Perfect fit to the Volvo Loader !...
on February 21, 2021

I'm an older collector who's been building Lego's since I was 7 years old. Many years ago when Lego started with the Technic line; they came out with a small yellow fork-truck, and after a lot of asking my parents gave me the set for my birthday. I think this was in the early 80"s that that set came out.
A few followed because they were not cheap and I didn't have the money. But after I graduated from school, started working, and made some extra money I had all the funds I wanted to make up for it. Lots of Technic sets later, Supercars, Cranes, Excavators, Bulldozers, and F1 racers;... I thinned out the collection a bit because my wife couldn't stand Lego sets in various building states throughout the house. I have my own room now just for that, and display models there mostly. But after thinning out all the sets, I kept some of the Technic sets that started my love for Lego. I kept the 10-wheeled crane with PF, have the Volvo Loader (remote control with PF) and now I bought this one to match the Loader.
This set is awesome. I'm quite good at building these sets, been doing so for many decades now, but this one is a challenge alright. After building all the rear wheel drives and differentials, and it's hooked to motors, there is no way anymore to "test" drive what you build;... Is it too tight ?, does it all turn ?,... etc.
I got really "scared" after bag three was done and the front wheel section was installed;... if you pick up the truck and rotate the wheels, it looks like the front two rotate opposite from the rear four. I got anxious but continued. After the build was done, and I turned it on for the first time, I expected the truck to give me an "error" or something because I thought the rotation would lock up the drive line.
It didn't !, and it works great. There is a small flaw in the instruction where a step shows something that isn't getting added until a few steps later. But overall the gears are amazing to work with and put together, and it's very mesmerizing to watch it all come to life.
I didn't give it five stars in the two sections for a reason. The truck is great, but the connection between the front and the back could be sturdier, so I docked a star for Value. And in the Play section I docked a star because I think it's high time for Lego to come up with a power source for these sets that will last longer than the 6 AA batteries give you. Especially for highly geared sets like these, that are big and heavy as well, there need to be more power for a longer period ?...
Please LEGO; give us another rechargeable battery box of some sort;... or better yet, make this hub a rechargeable one instead for big sets like these !
But for those tiny complaints I would give this set a five star rating overall for sure, and definitely would recommend getting this !!!
Thank you Lego, I can't wait for the next big one like this !..

Fun and Challenging
on September 1, 2020

This is my 3rd big LEGO technic set after getting the bucket wheel excavator and the Porche 911 a few years back. I decided to jump on this set because I was interested in controlling it through the app, as well as the 3 gear transmission. I have to say it was a very rewarding experience putting together the intricate mechanisms and found parts of this build quite challenging, even for a 20 year old, lol. In particular, looping the wires from the back portion of the truck to the front to connect to the usb hub was a little bit tricky. When you’re finally done building it and you connect it to the app, you have to let it calibrate, and let me just say seeing it come to life was kinda... freaky, but so cool at the same time. My few complaints with this set is that the truck moves pretty slow, and has a HUGE turn radius. After a few minutes, I can say that it’s very fun to drive around because it takes forever to get anywhere, especially if you’re driving it long distances outside like I was. Ehh maybe I’m being a bit too skeptical and kids won’t think as critically about it, but those are just my thoughts... take them as you will. I did have one missing piece (for the first time since I was 8!!!), but placed an order for it and it’s on its way. It wasn’t a very important piece, it was just a circular black 2x2 found on the interior when you pop the hood. Overall it was an enjoyable building experience and was fun to play with for a little bit. Probably better geared towards younger children to play with, but is a very nice display piece!

Bit disappointed
on June 14, 2021

I share the same problem others have mentioned in the model unsnaps when lifted as a unit. I have had to disassemble part of the rear of the cab to get the drive shaft and articulating surface to reattach. This unit will be a static pricey show piece and will require sliding a firm board or cardboard under it before I can move it to the floor for action. I also have to disconnect the battery pack to turn off the power and I can't find on line or in instruction booklet a way to shut down the unit for display.

Epic Set
on September 1, 2020

I absolutely love the top-level Technic sets that get released each year. While it strains my wallet, I eagerly order each flagship set shortly after it's released.
Like many epic Technic sets before it, set #42114 doesn't disappoint. One of my favorite parts about this set- and the last few flagship Technic sets- is the fact that when you are building the model- especially at the beginning- you often don't know exactly which functions you are building as you follow the instructions. The designers may use the same parts each time, but they continually find new and innovative ways to utilize those parts to increase the range of what these models can do- and that's part of the fun of building these larger sets.
Secondly, I really appreciate that Lego continues to design these flagship models that, in a way, sort-of compliment each other. As a result, after years of collecting, I now have a complete construction set. My #42009 Mobile Crane goes well with my #42030 Volvo Loader... which goes well with my #42110 Liebherr R9800, which goes well with this Volvo Hauler #42114.
I'm not a big fan of forcing Lego fans to use their cell phones as remote controls though- but that seems to be the trend lately. While it certainly adds functionality to the finished product, one of my favorite things about building these epic Legos is that it gets my son and I off of our electronics. I'd much prefer an old-fashioned physical remote control. That said, there's only so much you can do with those remote controls- and things like the automatic transmission function on this Volvo only is possible with a cell phone/app.
In terms of finished design, I'd say Lego got a lot right here... the overall shape and scale is pretty good to the actual real-life truck. The angles on the front end are especially impressive. My only two complaints in terms of design are the cabin and headlights. The cabin is very sparse. it would have been nice to at least include a sticker for the instrument panel, for example. I also wish they would have worked out a better design for the headlights- which on the real truck don't point so much to the side as the Lego model's does.
In terms of the motorized functions- the steering works very well, as does the raising and lowering of the cargo area. The automatic transmission works okay, but not great. Sometimes it works fine, at other times it seems to make some unpleasant noises while shifting through the gears. That seems to only happen in automatic mode- not when you use the app on your phone to lock it in 1st or 2nd gear.
Overall, I think Lego did a great job with this model. While it's price tag is high, you have to remember that you're getting a hub and three motors- which usually cost quite a lot if you buy them separately from Lego. Well done Lego... well done.

Looks Awesome BUT....

So I was very excited to buy this truck (it was this or the Nintendo). Not only for the build but for the play factor. I thought the remote control would be awesome for both my son and I. However once the build was complete, the trucks cab turns left to right but would not drive forward/backwards nor lift the bucket. However, if I lift it off the ground the wheels turn? Very disappointed!
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
