Too Complicated to Use
on April 25, 2023

I was used to my Garmin 6 that unfortunately couldn't be repaired so I'm trying the Approach Z82. I thought this would have the features of the G6 with the addition of laser functionality, but It is way too difficult to operate. I'm constantly hitting wrong button and then have to page back through menu and option pages to get back. Doesn't switch easily from shooting mode to course view mode. It is lightweight and laser locking feature is good. I don't see any benefit to pairing with my phone other than reporting scores and who cares about that. I'm likely to try it a few more times to see if my navigation skills improve, but if not it will be returned. I'm thankful for the 60 day return policy.

Unusable

The range finder portion is decent. It's a little weird getting used to an electronic viewfinder but it is accurate. The GPS is completely unusable. It's off by 20 yards on most holes at my home course. The other day I lasered a flag and it said 121 yd. But the GPS said the front of the green was 127. I compared the gps numbers with my Arccos App on my phone and my clip on voice Caddie. Those two were within one to two yards of each other while the Z82 was off by as much as 25 yards.

Nice update to Z80

I recently lost my Garmin Z80 range finder. After researching a replacement, I decided to stick to Garmin. I liked the built-in GPS feature and digital display. The new Z82 loads the GPS maps faster than the Z80 and I like the built-in wind speed and directions feature. But you must make sure you're connected to the Garmin golf app for this feature to work. Also, I noticed that if the phone has gone into sleep mode it takes a few seconds for the range finder to display the wind information.

Great!

A great rangfinder that not only finds the target quickly and accurately but also has great graphics showing the hole layout, hazards, etc. in the viewfinder. It can be a simple point and shoot target finder or as detailed as you want, I use it both ways depending on my shot needs at the time.

Exceptional GPS Range Finder Approach Z82
on June 7, 2023

The Approach Z82 has exceeded my expectations. Having used the Bushnell rangefinder for years decided to buy the Garmin Z82 to get both the rangefinder and GPS course maps in one unit. After using it a few weeks in both tournament play and normal rounds I can say it is absolutely worth the money. The Z82 performs better than the Bushnell when targeting the flag for distances as you scan the green it picks up the flag and locks in the distance faster. If your hand shakes using the Bushnell it is harder to lock in the pin unlike the Garmin Z82 that senses the flag easily as you scan across the flag momentarily it locks in and provides a good visual response along with the unit vibration. The unit is extremely good at locating the course and hole you are on, no problems to date. Watched a few videos on the use of the unit and I had no problem afterwards using it on the course.

I was hoping for more …

I’ve been using the Approach Z82 for a few months now to get used to it and give it a chance. I struggled getting used to the delay between the laser and the screen. I liked the full color screen with distances to hazards, the GPS data and the slope adjustment, but it’s just too slow. My old Bushnell hybrid laser with monochrome GPS data gives me readings in just a few seconds. The Z82 does everything it’s supposed to do but it is too expensive and too slow.

Unlike other rangefinders

I really like this rangefinder, screen is ultra clear and features unlike any other. Only reason I didn’t give it a five is the GPS readings aren’t always accurate and leads to confusing. For example, the pin might show 140 (back pin placement) and back edge of the green show 135.
