I had a higher end Ninja Pro blender which just didn't power on one morning (no lights). I loved parts of it and hated others so I decided to just try something different and I was planning on getting a vitamix. However, there was a shortage of their base models in Canada at the time I needed one. The base and higher end models had the same power, warranty and performance and the only difference was with the number of programs. Paying for programs on a blender in my opinion is a waste of money. For example the wash feature just turns the blender on for a few seconds. As you still need to wash the outside and top inside of the blender it doesn't really save you time and so is nothing more than an expensive gimmick to sucker you to paying more.
In searching for other options, I found a recommendation online for a Wolf blender but couldn't find one side by side comparison video review and pretty much the only written reviews I found all loved it but said they were too expensive compared to a vitamix but a quick online search let me know they were on sale making them a lot less expensive so I decided to go ahead and get one.
It feels a lot quieter than our Ninja blender was. Another family member found it louder but then also admitted you could have a normal conversation while it was running and that was not possible with our Ninja. I figure its noise is just in a lower frequency so maybe it technically is as loud but out of the frequencies that would conflict with conversation.
As for performance we love it. It definately outperforms our Ninja. When blending things like spinach in the Ninja it would chop it into very tiny flakes, spray them up the side and it took forever for them to slide down and eventually enter the blend and there was always some that wouldn't. This Wolf blender creates a great vortex pulling everything to the centre and down into the blades and as such in a fraction of the time it makes a perfectly smooth blend where you no longer see flakes. The Ninja also had multiple blades coming up a middle shaft which was a pain to get ingredients stuffed around at times. The Wolf only have a blade at the bottom allowing for easy adding ingredients.
The lid does not lock on as it does in the Ninja, however it goes on easily and feels secure enough I run it without holding it. It also has a centre cap that can be removed to add more ingredients while it is running or to use the included tamper (although I have not needed to use the tamper yet). This is a huge time saver.
My only complaint is there is a small gap under the blade that seems to get missed by the vortex. Normally that is not a problem but if I add a bunch of flour first and then the liquids and try to blend, I will find a tiny bit of unmixed powder under it. I've learned to just add the liquid first and with the opening in the lid I can actually open it and add powders while it is running so I get a great blend without overblending.
I have not tried it yet but was surpised to learn blenders could make soup - as in actually heat it - without a heating element. This blender spins so fast that it creates enough friction it can heat up room temp ingredients apparently in 6 minutes.
