Works Well for the money

I've been using this grill for a few years with no major issues. As others have said the iron grates rust quickly as expected, mine also cracked so I threw them away and cut a piece of expanded metal to fit. I also replaced the lower grate with expanded metal as the old one warped with frequent use. You really need to season the iron grates with vegetable oil to keep them from rusting, just like a skillet.
I modified mine with an actual temperature gauge above the vague one and added a fairly large smoke box below the grill so I can smoke jerky, ribs and other meats with it now. Works better than an offset for sure, wish they'd make them like this. Not bad for the price, easily modified to make a real solid rig. Working on a rotisserie for it now.
Cons: little wobbly until you weld it solid, the upper rack mounting is horrible (Replaced the 2 bolts with a single piece of all-thread), end caps for the side shelf all fell out, temp gauge is vague.

Survived Hurricane Sandy and keeps on tickin!

I have been barbecuing for 45 years and have owned many different grills and smokers during that time. I have never owed a "bad grill". I stick to brand names and always look the display model over carefully. Most grills are designed with a particular type of cooking in mind and if the buyer understands what they want from the grill and buys accordingly most brand name grills will perform well. I bought this grill on a whim in 2011. I live 5 blocks from the beach in New Jersey. During hurricane Sandy the grill was completely submerged in salt water, I actually thought it was gone. But when the flood waters receded there it was up against the fence, 20 feet from where it would normally be. I hosed it down good and have continued to use it since.
I use this grill year round several times a week for direct and indirect cooks. My only issue with it is that charcoal will fall down the sides under the fire grate if you are not careful when you place the coals. That is the only down side to the moveable fire grate, the gap at the ends of the grate, and certainly not a big deal. The upside of the moveable fire grate is that on longer cooks, as the heat disapates, the fire grate can be raised to compensate. On a long slow cook I will frequently start the cook with the food on the "warming rack" and as the coals burn down raise the fire grate. Those cooks typically finish with the food on the grilling grates and the fire grate all the way up. Probably not how others do it but I find this grill lends itself to this method.
Other reviewers have had issues with rust and deteriorating grates, that has not been my experience. Once I complete a cook I use a Grill Daddy brush to clean the grills which sort of steam cleans them and then close the vents and lid to snuff the coals. Once cool I empty the ash and apply a thin coating of vegetable oil to the cast iron grates. To date I have never had to replace any of the parts. My grilll has never been covered and is holding up fine, there is a very fine patina of rust on the lid. Overall my experience is that with minimal mantenance it has been very durable. I recently bought another for my youngest son when he moved out of the house. The newer grill is not much different tha the older one and looks like it should hold up well.
I would recommend this to a friend!

The grates rust no matter how well you season them. Do you offer a 1 piece stainless grate for this model?
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

This is a great little grill. When I purchased it there was broken grate. They do seem a little weak for a charcoal grill. But I have no problem making my own to fit. I do have a question though, can this be used at a smoker too? Looks like I would be able to...
I would recommend this to a friend!

Thank you for your positive feedback with this Charcoal Barrel Grill. Offset cooking or smoking can be done. To do this place your charcoal at one end and your food at the other. Give us a call at 1-800-241-7548 for more information.

rusty grates

I bought this grill a little over a year ago. The grates rust really quickly. Char-Broil sent me replacement grates. These grates were rusty with in one use. I only cleaned the grates with a non metal scrub pad in the kitchen sink. I would not recommend this grill.

I bought this grill one year ago, it has been great so far. I bbq year round afew times a month. Holds enough coal and hase enough space to grill for six people easily. I also used it as a smoker for ribs. I would rather an offset but it did the job nicely. Excellent buy, just keep it covered.

We bought this geill and the part that holds the grates were broken straight from the box. It is still usable but we can't adjust the grates. Won't ever be buying another one.

very good basic charcoal grill.

Had the grill a month. Use it 2 times a week. Works great. The handle should be thicker - you will need a glove - the steel coil is too thin. For some reason the grill did not come with the grease can holder.
