Love my new T490

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I'm a 20 year IT Professional and have had many different models of laptops during that time.
I wanted the thinnest business class laptop I could find with an on-board Ethernet port for connecting to switches and networking equipment to configure them.
My new Lenovo ThinkPad T490 more than exceeded my expectations.
My model has a quad-core i7 8565U CPU and 16GB of Ram, and 500GB SSD.
The laptop is solidly built, and the keyboard is the best I've ever used on a notebook.
It feels like I'm typing on a a regular sized keyboard, and I've yet to experience the mouse jumping around when typing due to poorly designed trackpad with less than optimal palm rest rejection.
I opted for the touchscreen as I use that a lot. I've only used it for two hours on battery but after two hours I still had 80% battery left.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Lenovo Thinkpad T490
Specs:
- 16 GB RAM
- HD display
- core i7-8565U up to 4.1 gHz i think
- with the fingerprint sensor
- 256 GB SSD storage
- retro-iluminated keyboard
- NVIDIA MX250 graphics
Bought the laptop about a month and a half or so and it took a while to get to my address, mainly because it was in the customs office for about a week. When the product finally arrived it was in pretty good conditions. The graphics are pretty decent, runs rocket league 50-60 fps pretty nicely, it does create a good amount of heat on the right side but it’s not much to worry about. The display once in a while sort of starts blinking when it’s on the lockscreen, I believe it’s some issue with the fingerprint scanner since it sort of thinks that a finger is in the scanner and just says wrong, i have to enter my pin when that happens. Overall it has served pretty well all my general purposes, it runs the Unity Game Engine pretty well as well as Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code. The battery charges up pretty fast, haven’t had the time to test the battery (i bought the smallest battery capacity).
The keyboard is pretty great, i really like the way it feels and I sometimes use the trackpoint.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I got this new laptop a week ago. After using ThinkPad E490, I can say that T490 feels much better: the build quality looks and feels more sturdy. The keyboard is amazing with just the right key travel. I love the new webcam cover - it's a really great feature. The performance overall has been a blast so far - had no problems going about my everyday work.
Additionally, I'm very happy about the size and weight of this computer.

Overall satisfied with purchase

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought the model with the 500Gb SSD and i7 CPU. Overall I am satisfied with my purchase, keyboard feel is good (as with my previous thinkpads), as is the performance. I wish it could have more USB ports (only 2, but probably targeted for users with some sort of docking station) and an external, swappable battery. Don't know how long the USB-C charging port will last, it feels more flimsy than the setup I had in my previous machines.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Fantastic typing and control experience. The default bloatware is a little irritating, but after a fresh windows install it performs great.

Major flaw with the design of the touch pad

The T490 is a disaster. I chose it because of the strong reviews on T470 and T480. Basically the frame below the trackpad is too narrow and as a result, after my upgrade, the bottom panel cannot be fully closed. My rating is based on my experience with opening the unit and upgrading the SSD, which was free of any issue. However, either the material is not of high quality (as compared to the X1) or the intention to squeeze in a larger touch pad had made the upgraded unit an eyesore. For those of you who are considering it, if you do not intend to open the bottom panel ever, then you can skip this review.

Excellent work laptop at the right price point

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Typical Lenovo build quality--solid. The keyboard has a slightly "spongy" feel, but far superior to most laptop keyboards, especially those in the ultra-thin/light category. This does make the T490 slightly thicker than the competition, but that's a trade-off that I'm willing to make in order to get a nice keyboard. The unit is pleasantly light, and is a good travel companion. I'm glad someone still makes a laptop that allows you to easily upgrade RAM and SSD. Great as a Linux platform--everything (except the fingerprint reader) including the NVidea video card works out of the box with POP/Ubuntu.
