Does what I was hoping and expecting!

One of the main reason I picked this up was for the 4K @ 120Hz, VRR and HDR and doesn't disappoint! So previous reviews stating it doesn't support certain functions must have been resolved in firmware updates! I was pleasantly surprised that it continues to pass-through when I use my headset and keep the receiver off.
Sound quality is actually pretty good and much improved from my old Yamaha. My only extra little wish was if there was a little more wattage but I already knew that from the specs...
I would actually give this 4.5 stars but no half-star option

Great Receiver, Better than Sony

purchased this last minute as my Sony receiver died after 4 yrs. and the XBR 65" I bought died after 2 yrs. Needless to say, switched brands. ONKYO sounds better, more options, quick set up and recognizes other devices quickly and accurately. Havnt completed full set up with Google but will do soon enough. Just been enjoying the great sound.
a lil more expensive than I wanted to pay,... but... you definitely get what you pay for with ONKYO. no regrets.

Actually good for 4k/120hz setup because of eARC

Plug your 4k/120hz devices(including PC HDMI) to TV and use eARC HDMI port on TV for audio out to eARC on this AVR. So far this AVR has been awesome for me because of the eARC option. I'll always prefer to have my devices directly connected to the TV for best quality. This AVR is a bit expensive though... worth it if you want to take advantage of the wifi/bluetooth/chromecast.

My HK died suddenly and sadly HK doesn't make receivers anymore. So in the market for new theatre system I was going to go with pioneer but the onkyo's were on sale. Watched my first movie John Wick 3 and all I can say is wow! I don't need to go to a theater anymore. It sounds just the same. My Harmon Kardon was a great machine but stacked to this thing was underpowered. The HK was 60 watts per channel this one is 165 watts per channel. Not sure if thats the difference but my subs sound more concussive and gut wrenching and the highs are glass shatteringly powerful. Mid Ranges are better too. All the while it isn't painful to the ear at loud volume, the clarity is incredible. Setup was very easy and surround calibration brilliant and accurate. I haven't found a stereo where I didn't re-adjust EQ settings after an auto calibration. Would definitely recommend this entry unit. Yes this is the least powerful 7.2 system but is 4 steps up in terms of power compared to my previous system.

Could'nt get it back to the store fast enough

It hooked up and installed very smoothly. But when I used the volume control on the remote the sound cut out completely until the volume level had clicked down a notch and then kicked back in. It seemed like it had to calculate the volume and then switch off the sound to reset and then turn the sound back on. The sound quality was not that impressive either. If they gave me this unit for free I would still take it back.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
