A 4 star model with a 5 star option!

As built, this is a challenging model with incredible structural strength. As built this is a 4x4 truck that can handle minor off-roading. As built, this is a fun truck! We had wet snow falling the day after I built it and I took it outside. In 1/4" (7mm) or less of heavy wet snow the truck did fine, but once you got in to deeper snow it would stall once the snow built up under the differential. Not very impressive. This is why this is a 4 star model.
How to get to 5 star? Below are three changes you need to make, extremely easy if you built it this way outright, if you need to modify it look up on YouTube the 5-minute fix for the 42099 model. This little set of changes does two things, it cuts the speed in half, but it allows you to run in 1.5" (38mm) heavy wet snow and keep going. I drove around for over 20 minutes until I finally pushed my luck and high-centered.

Step 78 - use the tan gear from step 82 not the black one
Step 82 - use the black gear from step 78 not the tan one you already used
Step 159- left side of the picture, there is a black and tan gear, carefully swap them.

Fantastic 4X4!

As a huge Technic fan, I am very pleased with this model. I had to get my hands on the new Control+ system as soon as possible and am pleasantly surprised. New planetary hubs and stronger, longer CV joint components are going to be game-changers. Modular design means the body is easily removable. Don't be concerned with the price to parts ratio. The Control+ is very robust and adds quite a bit to the play. There are achievements and badges to earn inside the app, which makes it pretty hard to put down. As much as I love the older 9398 4X4 Crawler, I was concerned this model might have some of its shortcomings. I was surprised by the increased speed of this model over the 9398 while maintaining enough torque to handle most of the obstacles I threw at it. If you are a Technic fan, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

First Technic set and I love it.

My wife bought me this for my birthday knowing how much I love legos. This was my first Technic set so was kind of challenging. Took me 6 hours but worth it. Final product was amazing. Played it for two days.

Long but easy build

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My son loves this one. It took him a while to build and he didn’t not do it in one go but over a couple of weeks. Just like other LEGO kits, this one is easy and very user friendly. The app was easy to connect to and use, and he loved that it worked like any remote control car only this time he built it. Personally, I found this set to be very rewarding for a child and i love the fact that it can actually be used after assembly and not just sit there gathering dust.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Great product

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I gave this to my 10 year old nephew for Christmas and he loved it! With some adult help we put it together. I’m not sure who had more fun playing with it though- him or me.

Fun to build. On the app, to me, the controls are reversed. Steering on left gas on right. Takes a bit to get use to. Fun to build. Not repetitive at all. I like displaying more than playing with it. Mine seems to pull to one side when driving.

Such an amazing Build and Toy

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I got this for my 2 kids, 9 yr old and 4 yr old. My son really just loves to look at cars and trucks so this was a no brainer. My daughter is super into legos and we started to work on this together. My son had fun putting on the sticker decals. Unfortunately, I had to finish the job but it was super fun for the kid in me too. I do think the recommended age is accurate as an older kid would probably want to spend more time with building it. But, being able to then use the app and control and drive it around made it so much fun. The motors are actually strong enough to go over small things which makes this "off road" toy actually work. The app was super easy to use even for my 4 year old, so he still gets to play with it. YAY!
I immediately started looking for the other builds in this product line. This is a great toy!
I would recommend this to a friend!

Absolutely great brainer product

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] It was nicely stacked and packed for building it from scratch, what an engineering marvel to build this truck. It took me 4 days of continuous effort to enjoy me building this monster truck. In my true opinion I enjoyed more building (assembling) Legos piece by piece. it refreshed my mechanical memories. I absolutely enjoyed 4 days of building effort and playing after it was fully assembled. It was like watching a baby growing up.
