Everything You Want From a LEGO Build
on March 25, 2020

What an incredibly fun, challenging build this was!
Directions were extremely clear - at no point did I feel I was flying blind. When things didn't work or fit, it was inevitably my mistake. Figuring out those mistakes was part of the fun.
Mid-build Bluetooth motor testing went perfectly. I had a couple of issues with a previously-connected power pack having problems reconnecting, but that was because I exited, but did not terminate, the Connect Plus app. It was easily fixed by taking out a battery and, essentially, rebooting the pack.
When all was done, the last test - the moving of the scoop front to back - failed. I heard the ending purring perfectly, but the gears and scoop did not move. I figured out that I didn't put one key dowel into the red motor input (I accidentally put it in a hole just to the side), and with very little deconstruction got it in the right spot.
That didn't end the problems - the hinges that connect the front scoop panel to the motor/gears were connected wrongly. After about an hour of trial and error, I finally got everything in the right spot, successfully calibrated the unit, and I was off to the races.
I hope this doesn't sound like a criticism of the set - as I said, every error was my own fault, and it was a sick kind of fun figuring out every which way I went wrong. When the unit finally worked perfectly, it was incredibly gratifying.
I will say the Bag # 5 set of parts (the last stage of construction) was a little tedious - lots of ladders, lights, trim, but I do have to say the once it was done (after about 90 minutes of work), all these little bits added up to a better-looking, more realistic excavator.
I haven't played much with the set other than to test out what it can do, but that will come, now that I finally worked out the bugs.
Bottom line: I absolutely LOVED this build. It required a level of focus and attention to detail that I found very, very rewarding.
This takes the place of the Roller Coaster (10261) as my favorite build. I can't recommend this any higher!

Better to play with after it is built
on October 11, 2019

The build is not the most pieces of any set, nor is it the most complex, there were no real problems building it and it was pretty straightforward. The only problem I had was solved when it turns out you ned to have all motors connected to the second hub to test it. This is not in the instructions, but calling support they are aware of it and just plugging the motors in will allow you to test part two.
The thing is pretty heavy, the bag of 100 "rocks" is a good touch and it is how the LEGO group is able to claim that this is the largest set by piece count. Those pieces are not in the model unlike the rough terrain crane so I don't count them.
When playing with it, make sure to stow the steps and lock them in place, I did not do that originally and caught it in the carpet.
The controls are well explained and the app works fine on my phone. The model is very smooth compared to most power functions sets as there are not a lot of complex gears in the boom. The boom and bucket are all moved by linear actuators. The new longer linear actuator is soing to be something to play with in the future.
All in all, a nice build, fun and heavy. Lots of replay value. Most of the expense is in the electronics and the license I suspect. But it is really fun to play with.

BEST SET EVER!!!!!!!!

To anyone who is thinking about buying this set. I say to them. BUY IT!!!!! I love the details put into this set. And the functionality is great. Everything works so smoothly from the app and everything. ALSO!!! To anyone who is having trouble with the step two smart hub testing process. When you do that. You have to have all of the motors connected to the hub in order for it to connect to the app. And after you are done testing. You can take out the extra motors you just put in. And continue building. I hope that this solved the confusion, because I really don’t like seeing bad reviews on a LEGO set.

Excellent Build - If it worked!

This is by far the best technic set ever released by LEGO. It is well designed, fun to put together, very large amount of parts per step(which I love), is huge in size, resembles the real life machine quite well. Now for the biggest downside, one of the battery boxes will not turn on or connect to the app(after countless hours of troubleshooting, testing the batteries, and checking for correct setup) resulting in a model that cannot be played with and less than a joy. I love it but cannot give it any more than 2 stars due to its price for collecting dust, and the sheer fact it doesn't function as intended.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Hi there, thanks for your review. I'm so glad you enjoyed building the new Liebherr R 9800 Excavator and I'm sorry you're having difficulty getting one of the Smart Hubs to turn on and connect via Bluetooth. As long as you're using fresh, non-rechargeable batteries from the same brand, the Smart Hubs should both light up. If that's not the case, please get in touch with us at LEGO.build/Service and we'll be happy to help get your excavator up and running!

Best play experience ever had
on October 6, 2019

First of all this set is not that “technic” compared to some of the “groundbreaking” flag ship sets. One thing I really need to give credit to is the play experience. Honestly Id rather have a set that’s ok interesting to build and works great after built( especially for sets with power functions ) than a set that has a fancy gear box and long drive trains but doesn’t work as smooth as you would expect. This is something that I always had complaints about technic sets. The Arocs is probably the only set that’s satisfying to build as well as to play with. (Highly recommend this set)
So in terms of play experience this set really does a great job, everything works really smoothly(thanks to the short drive trains). APP works good as well. The only minor issue with the set is driving. The motors for the tracks is a little bit on the weak side. While on a perfectly flat surface it works great. When on a slightly rougher surface turning is almost impossible as it can no longer handle the torque without triggering the new clutch. A bit disappointed but none the less a fantastic set.

Awesome Set

Highly rewarding build. I took my time and had a lot of fun putting this set together. The bucket open and close function could be better and I wish the app would allow for some manual tweaking of the calibrations and speed reactions. Otherwise great. Looking forward to more great Technic sets this year!!

Thank you for your review. It's great to hear you had a lot of fun putting it together!

You may want to check out the Powered Up app, it's ideal for some extra tweaking. :)
