Elevation issues
on October 16, 2023
Posted by: Smithmj54
On my second Garmin and it had the same issues as my last. Doesn’t matter if I do a saved course or just ride. It’ll always be a few thousand feet off on my elevation gain, so it’s nice to plan a course before you ride so you know how much hills you have. Because if you’re doing a blind ride in a new area you’re doomed if you have a lot of hills. This one will show a -12% grade and you’re clearly going uphill not down!

Not my best experience

I’ve had several different Garmin device from everyday wearables to edge devices and I’ve always been really happy with them. By the time I got the 830 it was amazing I loved it, but not so long after I’ve start facing issues, the very first was that it was no connecting to my wahoo trainer I understand is a different brand (although other Garmins did connect perfectly) so I let it got and use my computer to set my different trainings.
Some months ago I’ve start facing the problem that the Garmin would disconnect randomly from my sensors (HR, Speed, cadence, power, etc) but after a while it would reconnect.
I made sure the firmware was the last one, change battery in all my sensors but it was the same scenario. It was difficult to sync with the app must of the times to upload my rides.
The jump sensor embedded in the Garmin does not always detect the jumps and sometimes detect jumps that I didn’t made, but I can live with that. Until couple of weeks were my Garmin decided not to connect with ANY device (phone, sensor)
I would not blame all the company for this and I have friends that have the same device and get no issues.
It was just probably me getting the bad luck to get a defective device. Looking forward for my replacement (either a 840 or 1040), but definitely I will continue to be a Garmin user.

Reliable but disappointing

I've been using edge 830 along with my cell phone mounted on my handlebars. I really wanted to use the edge alone but have found that the mapping capabilities are very poor compared to the phone apps such as Komodo and Strava for navigation. It seems the GPS or something in the Garmin often tells me that it's off course when I'm not and the cell phone app doesn't fail in maintaining the course. Besides the navigation issues, the Garmin seems well built and does mostly what it's supposed to do. At this point, I'm wondering if I could have achieved everything that I wanted to do with only the cell phone connecting to my cadence speed and radar tail light without the expense of having bought the Garmin edge 830.

Pretty Cool Bike Computer!

I’ve only used it twice so far but so far so good! Still in the learning curve phase. One thing I noticed last ride was the map would continually pop up every time I crossed a hiking trail (I’m solely a mountain biker) and I needed to touch the screen to get back to my riding stats. It’s probably a setting that can be configured so it doesn’t do this so not worried about it at the moment. Otherwise synched up with my Polar H10 heart monitor easy. It doesn’t seem to connect to WiFi so far. I’ve played with it a bit to try to get it to looking online and trying Garmin Express and other tricks but so far no luck. Seems others have this issue too. I don’t care too much because I bluetooth to my phone and it downloads the rides. Otherwise it holds on the bike great. Love the stats it provides. I have some learning to do what some of them mean like Grit and Flow but otherwise it tracks the map, speed and other features great. I haven’t used the navigation yet so can’t really comment if trails are accurate and up to date. Happy with my purchase so far!

When it works great product! But this is the second issue I have had a problem. Didn’t take a charge and then shut ride off in the middle of the ride. There is on section of a road in Jupiter Fl the screen change . Lastly it loose your sensor and have to reconnect them. I think it occurs after a automatic software update. In summary the 830 Garmin is problematic!

My main complaint which may have nothing to do with Garmin is every time I travel when I get back home the device can't locate satellites.

Insanely Capable

This is my third Garmin. As I’ve grown as a cyclist I found myself needing more features and capabilities. The Edge 830 is not only a powerhouse of features and capabilities but the layout and intuitiveness of how to use it makes for a very pleasant user experience… greatly improved from previous models. Every time I think up a feature or a display format I think I need, I quickly discover Garmin has though of that and it’s already built in. So far it’s been everything I hoped for and much more. Couldn’t be happier.
