bought the 830 one week before the 840 came out.

What i found out is that the 830 is still very competent for my needs and such a big upgrade to my old Edge 1000 that i hadn't planned on upgrading (bikes at different locations) that i decided to make the plunge for the 1040 (non solar). the 830 and i expect my 1040 was so easy to set up, the page navigation was easier once i spent a little time figuring it out. transfering data was quick and simple, adding new bikes was cake. i would like to have option for 3 or 4 customizable pages but made the 2 work for me.. post ride data is very much improved with watts, VO2, cadence data once you save the ride. clearer screens better in sun, touch screen stronger than before. all in all i do not feel like i have an old computer. after reading the reports on the new 840 i didn't see enough to make me ask for the 840.

I bought this strictly for Mountain Biking. I love the ease of set-up and all the features it works flawlessly. I really like the Trail Forks App. I'm Glad I went with the touch screen feature.

My 10 year old Edge 510 was not syncing correctly. Garmin support suggested it was an antique ( my words).
I upgraded to the 830, Amazing! I can read it better and the new touch screen is so easy. Most of all the battery plug in is much better!

Great device, still learning

I just bought it 2 weeks ago, primarily for a group trip to Tuscany. Would have been nice to know I needed the maps from Europe. Instructions were very basic. Had to orders the shorter extended mount for my Tri bike. Took 2 calls but customer service was great.

Not just a GPS

I purchased this with a very high end road bike only wanting a basic computer and navigation. I am blown away by all the easy to use features on top of the things I first wanted. Simple to set up and navigate through and linking to the Garmin connect is a breeze. From an old school cyclist you really should embrace this technology

Good upgrade from 520+

I bought this to upgrade from my old 520+.It has a lot of new features, loads much faster and love the touch screen. I just wish it was a little bit bigger. The 520 is too small and the 1040 way too big.
