Not Exactly an Upgrade
on June 25, 2019

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Was hoping for an upgrade to my current printer, which I`ve owned for 10 years, but I can`t say that I exactly got one. This printer has some good features such as print quality and WiFi capabilities, but there are some issues that I can`t get past.SET-UPPros - The Wifi connection between the printer & my laptop was pretty easy. WiFi connection on my phone was even easier. All it took was downloading the app, then the app took care of the rest. I tested wireless printing from both for a few days, and the printer was always connected & ready to print. Continuous connectivity was a problem I had with my last printer. This HP MFP 179 has no issues at all. The ink was already installed, so it was just a matter of taking the machine out of the box, plugging it in & adding paper to be ready to print.Cons - The "quick" set-up instructions were awful. Mostly just drawing style pictures and arrows with no explanations. The pictures were in only three colors making it difficult to distinguish between printer parts without having real photos, labels or actual instructions. A "manual" was included, but it was only three pages. The full manual must be downloaded, but it`s not the best. I had to contact HP support with questions about some things that aren`t covered in the manual. Adding the paper wasn`t hard, but it took an extra 30 minutes to figure out how to put the paper tray back in. The instructions didn`t show a picture of the tray sticking out from the bottom of the machine & the machine came with the paper tray fully inserted, which I assumed is how it is supposed to stay. Turns out the initial position of the tray was in compacted form, which can only be used if you are printing on smaller paper such as 4 x 6 or 5 x 7. Otherwise, the tray must be expanded. Once expanded, it no longer fits all the way in again. There are no pictures, photos or explanations in the quick set-up instructions, manual or on the box that show the tray sticking out. I finally gave up afraid I might break it trying to shove that tray back in. SIZEThe printer appeared to be a space saver compared to my last one in both length and width. I was happy to be getting some desk space back. However, with the tray unable to be pushed back into the printer with standard size 8 1/2 x 11 paper in it, I lost some of the space I thought I was getting. It`s misleading. There should have been a heads-up about the paper tray not being fully part of the printer body once paper is inserted.FUNCTIONALITYMore paper tray issues! Adjusting the paper tray space for smaller size paper is a nightmare. It`s hard to move the barrier positions back & forth. I was afraid I`d break something when trying to maneuver the pieces that hold the paper in place. Expanding & shrinking the tray was also difficult. Pieces have to fit into each other before the tray can slide out or in. It`s not easy to get them into the right spots & sometimes when you get one or two inserted, another one pops out of place. Also, the bottom tray is the only tray! No paper feed in the back of the machine for photo paper or smaller sized paper. If you want to use anything besides the copy paper that normally sits in the tray, you must remove the tray, take out the paper, adjust the tray size & barrier positions that hold the paper in place, then add the new paper. When you`re done, you do it all over again in order to put the regular paper back in. Time suck.PRINTINGI didn`t know a laser printer uses different paper than an inkjet, so I ordered some to compare. The print quality is definitely better! Photos are sharper & more vibrant. I got the same results when using copy paper to print photos. Printing speed is great. My only issue was that all size photo paper came out curled after printing.SCANNINGI faced no issues with scanning. It was simple and nothing to figure out.FAXINGI haven`t tested the fax feature yet.

A Fast and Powerful Little Machine!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was looking for a laser printer that would be within our budget, a good size for our small office, and most importantly, fast and effective. This machine meets all of those requirements and is a total powerhouse! The easiest set up out of the box I have ever seen, and I was able to start copying almost immediately. The instructions were clear and easy to follow, and no setup was required. The speed of this machine blew me away. Unlike other printers I`ve had, I was able to make multiple color copies within minutes, and the image is crisp and clear. No issues with using the machine or connecting to wifi, and I was impressed with how sturdy and compact it is. I will be using this printer for printing materials for tutoring, as well as printing items to use with my craft and shirt making business. I am so happy with this product, the only suggestion I would make is offering it in black as the white tends to stick out, but that`s strictly a personal appearance preference. Otherwise, I have zero complaints about this printer, it works perfectly!

Great Printer Addition

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received this printer in exchange for my unbiased review. Many, many years ago I had an HP black and white laser printer which I used until I could no longer update the driver. I was thrilled when I received the opportunity for the HP MFP 179fnw Color Laser Printer. I received the printer, unpacked it and thought wow the printer has a small foot print, nice. Set up was not difficult, I had to dig a little to figure out the set up instructions because I needed to go online. I am a bit old fashion regarding set up instructions and manuals I prefer everything to be in the box and in printed form. I understand in todays world this is not the preferred method for most users. Once I had the printer set up and connected wirelessly, which was easy to do, I was printing away. After printing several items I realized how clean and crisp laser printer items were and that I had missed that aspect. The colors are vibrant and really stand out. Printing is quick. It is very easy to copy and or scan pages. The document feeder works smoothly and gets the job done. I have really enjoyed using this printer. It has made my day to day work go more smoothly. I have recommended this printer to both my neighbor and my sister.

HP Small business printer

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This business printer is medium duty, small to midsize businesses. This printer wakes up quickly and prints pretty rapidly when prompted. It has a fax machine built in as well as a scanner. The fax works like standard fax and the scan option is wonderful- get your emails out quicker and easier. This 3 in 1 machine is ideal for small to midsize businesses that are looking for a multi-function machine. The keys are easily read and the display is big enough that you can read it but it doesn`t take up much room. It is pretty quiet when operating, so taking phone calls while printing is not an issue.I recommend this printer to every small to midsize business looking for a multi-functional machine. This printer can get the job completed.

An awesome little printer

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received this product in exchange for my unbiased opinion.I have struggled in my search for a printer, trying to find the right balance between functionality and size. I have not cared for extremely large printers that take up a lot of space on my desk while having a ton of functions I don`t need. This printer is the perfect compromise. The weight of the printer is a little on the heavy side so I was discouraged as I took it out of the box but was happy to see it took up even less space on my desk as my fewer-functioned existing printer. The printer has more height than width.I am not one for reading directions so I tested how far I could get in setup without referring to the manual. Cords and ink compartments were as expected. The printer fired up on plug in and power on. I only referred to the manual for locating the menu button and setting up the wireless connection. I printed a beautiful, almost picture-like color page on my first test run. The black and white test page was as expected.Printing from my Android phone required install of two apps; however, upon launch of the apps, the connection to the printer was effortless. With all the fax, copy, color, wireless functionality, I expected a clunky, difficult to use product. Instead, it was a pleasant surprise and looks quite nice on my desk.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] "I received this product in exchange for my unbiased opinion." I needed a more versatile printer because of late I was printing more than documents. Setting up the printer was simple and I used a wireless connection. I did have some trouble with loading the paper, I kept getting an error to load paper so I had to adjust the paper settings. I started with simple color printing of a newsletter which was good, no streaking or fading of the colors. Next, I moved to my personal favorite of printing photos of my grandchildren and making my own collages! Of course, you need quality photo paper which I used. I used the HP printer app which was user friendly and had many options to choose from. I am satisfied with this printer and I love the HP Smart app.

Very Good Printer

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This printer was easy to work with from the get-go. HP provides very simple instructions in the user guide to set up the printer. There was minimal assembly, just the paper drawer, and that was simple.I have a home-based business. I have been looking for a real solid printer, as I need to print multi-page documents, such as lease agreements. I think I have finally found it.What I really like about this model is the quality of the printed document. Letters and pictures are crisp. The color output is outstanding. I have to compare this with the numerous printers that I have purchased in the past that have not come close to meeting my needs and expectations. My suggestion for improvement would be to make the central button easier to understand. I do find myself consulting the guide very often, to learn to navigate the functions. There are a fair amount of options on this printer, so it does take some time to get comfortable with it. My overall impression of this printer is that it is a wise choice for a small business, where rapid output is not required, but professional quality is desired.
