The string is nylon cord which after putting several beads on unravels enough that it requires to be cut again and again OR the the end can be heated/burnt to eliminate unraveling: either way it's beyond a 4 to 8 year old. Instuctions are also lacking: better explanation of "pressing the wide end of the clasps together", this "adult" couldn't accomplish. Perhaps on 'your' website a video of an eight year old completing bead work in this set could be provided.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
