Go for the full size
on October 25, 2020

I am the only tea drinker in my house so I thought the compact would be a great choice for me. Honey I feel like Breville is just trying to pull a fast one on customers with the compact. The basket is half the quality of the one that goes with the full size. My friend has the full size and not only is the basket all metal vs plastic bottom, but size of the holes in the basket are much smaller so you don’t lose half of your tea while it brews. The quality of the basket for the compact is subpar. This annoying, cheap, and flawed basket Issue could be rectified by purchasing a replacement basket, however, Breville only offers a replacement that fits the full size. I thought maybe I could just buy a new basket, but they do not fit. (I tried my friend’s.) my recommendation would be to purchase the full size if you are a loose leaf tea drinker and/or if you don’t want a bunch of plastic being heated and reheated in your tea. I’m sure this was Brevilles plan-have customers buy the full size rather than take care of their customers equally no matter what product they purchase.

Crummy basket
on October 6, 2020

The tea basket on the compact model, unlike my full-sized one, has a cheap tea basket that has a plastic bottom with large holes, instead of a stainless steel mesh. That means, pure and simple, that the loose tea scatters out on the countertop, and in the machine. I would not buy it if i knew that

Basket does not drop
on January 18, 2021

I bought this for my wife for Xmas 2020. It was used approximately once or twice a day for maybe 15 days total in less than a month. The basket has failed to lower once the water boils. I have tried drying out the machine to do the factory "reset" as they say. That doesnt seem to do anything. I a returning to the store today and will update.
The instruction to turn a machine over to dry out for 24 hours does not seem like a real engineering solution to a daily (or mulitple) use machine. Would you accept if your tank like coffemaker need to take a day off occasionally to take a dry out rest...come on!

I have both Breville tea makers this one and the larger one with all the bells and whistles. That one is 5 stars. I gave this one 1 star left because there is no timer on it so I cannot adjust my tea time to steep to my preference. Also, you have to remember to press the keep warm button before you make your tea for that function to work. The other thing is the basket holder is not as good as some of the leaves will fall in the pot and I have to strain them out before I can drink my tea. Overall it is a good machine but the larger one is much better. I noticed Breville is giving free coffee to their customers who bought a coffee machine it is a shame they are not showing the same appreciation to their tea customers with a free bag of tea . Oh well. Merry Christmas!
I would recommend this to a friend!

After About One Year Tea Basket Doesn't Drop Anymore
on December 4, 2021

I received this as a gift about a year ago for Christmas and was extremely excited to use it. Worked pretty well for about 8 months and then suddenly the tea basket goes into a state of constantly lowering and raising, at first I thought no big deal I'll just use it to heat my water at least, and that doesn't work either. I really can't recommend this as a gift or really any of their similar products because after reviewing some of them they all suffer from the same problem.
I even attempted to run through their diagnostic steps and ways to fix the problem and nothing really works. Cool product but not worth the money.

Will work better for loose tea than tea bags
on December 29, 2019

I like the fact that this is a smaller version of the original automatic tea maker. It is a more practical way for one person to brew tea. Its compact size also works better on the kitchen counter. It is an attractive looking appliance. Even brewing for a full five minutes, the tea is on the weaker side. This is particularly true if you use tea bags and not loose tea in the basket. This probably has to do with the minimal agitation of the tea leaves when the basket slowly descends and lifts. Of course real tea is brewed by pouring boiling water into a pot of tea leaves. This method is closer to dunking a tea bag in hot water. Also the basket would be better to be full stainless steel mesh and not mostly plastic. The latter has lips and ridges that make it quite difficult to wash out spent tea leaves. There is no timer on the smaller carafe version which would have been nice. I was hoping to be able to set it up the night before for automatic tea in the morning. Another design error is the fact that the bottom of the tea basket will sit in the water when you fill the carafe to the full 4 cups. This causes the tea to start leaching out. This could have been prevented by having the basket position only a few millimeters higher. The solution is to not fill the carafe to the full 4 cup line. This seems like a silly oversight. Time will tell how this works out practically and if the mechanism will endure.

One flaw ruins it all

I really like the concept of this machine as a whole, but the poorly designed basket ruins the overall idea of a loose leaf tea maker. The bottom of the basket isn’t mesh and some of the loose tea will leach out. Works great of you use satchels. It would be nice if Breville would address the design and offer a redesigned basket for purchase or replacement. I would give 5 star if it wasn’t for the basket.

Buy the regular size tea maker
on March 15, 2021

I have owned and loved the regular size tea maker for years. I give it a 5 +stars. The basket that holds the tea in the compact size is not made for loose tea. It seeps through the holes on the bottom of the basket. I buy quality loose tea so that is not the issue. And it does not happen with the basket of the larger one. Very disappointing.
