Holding on to it

My first impression of the Canon EOS M when I picked it up was wonderful, well built little camera, solid, strong, tight. then I started shooting with it and got a little frustrated with the focusing problems. The image quality is excellent...I love it. The video is very good.
I know my expectation were really high after coming from a EOS Mark II. I knew it would have the and quality as the Mark II but it almost did. The video can't touch the Mark II but the image quality is close.
All in all, I'm happy with it but I wish I would have waited for the second generation. I will not give up my EOS M. I do like it. I just can't use it for sporting events (unless I'm not too close to the subjects) & low light shooting (no night clubs). I must say that the low light video is really good!
I’m eagerly waiting for a firmware update that might help the focusing problems.
Pros: quiet, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu
Cons: Slow Start-up time, Short battery life, slow focus
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Good little camera with some limitations

I bought an EOS M summer 2013 when the price took a nose dive and have not regretted it. This camera had gotten some pretty nasty reviews from some people and review sites when it first came out. Mainly because of the slow auto focus and lack of certain features like wifi, gps and built in flash. Canon updated the firmware which sped up AF considerably but still not up to what was expected to compete with other mirror-less cameras. Especially in low light. In my opinion it's not as bad as some have let on. Other than that is't a pretty good camera.
The Good:
Image quality is pretty good in my opinion. On par with other Canon APS-C size sensor cameras. The touch screen is really nice and operates like a smartphone. You can rack focus between points by touching the screen in different areas. Great when shooting video. Touch shutter let's you set the focus point and take the pic by touching the screen. Typical Canon menu layout and navigation. You can zoom in when using manual focus. Very solidly built magnesium alloy body. Quiet shutter. Built in HDR mode. Adapter available to use ALL Canon EF and EF-S lenses on it. Small.
The Not So Good:
AF is slow but not "that" slow. No built in flash. No viewfinder. Optical or electronic. No wifi or gps like some competitors cameras but Not a deal breaker for me. Battery life (apx 230 shots) compared to a DSLR is very short but this is typical of all mirror-less cameras regardless of brand. Use in bright daylight, especially when trying to shoot video. No PASM mode selection knob.
Conclusion:
Excellent camera picture quality and build wise if you can live with it's limitations. Not for sports, birds in flight or fast moving targets in general. Good for landscape, still life and street photography. I've been very pleased with mine and take it with me all the time. The little 22mm F2 pancake lens is extremely sharp and great for street photography and candid shots. Nobody will pay any attention to you and you get DSLR quality Photos. There are now six lenses in the EF-M line up and the EOS M3 addressed a lot of the M and M2's shortcomings. So Canon is building up the M line and that should please all us Canon shooters.
