The complete package!

I got this camera body in time to shoot some great sporting events here in the Rockies including the U.S. Pro Cycling Challenge, the 45th annual Ruggerfest and the Motherlode Volleyball Classic. For me, the AI tracking is the "must have" for any sports photographer and the 1Dx is head and shoulders over anything I have used in the past. Now with the latest firmware update giving me red focus points on the viewing screen, low light shooting is even easier. Setting the custom settings took a few minutes and then it was shoot away! The burst rate made for some amazing captures as well as the super fast transfer rate to the memory card meant I was never waiting. I like the slightly changed menus items and I found them very easy to navigate through. After reading up on setting and changing the AI functions, I found I could easily switch back and forth from with getting the burst off or the focus first. Great for shooting sports like rugby and hockey. The low light capabilities are just great and shooting in the range of ISO 6,400 are well within reach and only need minor touchup for noise in post, if at all. The rugged build gives me the usual confidence that I have with Canon's 1D models. I shoot in rain or shine, so this is a great feature. All in all, a complete package for me!
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, customizable controls
Cons: Heavy/Bulky

1Dx A Workhorse and Genius

I've used the 1Dx for almost a year at full, packed, crowded events where it has taken a beating like no other and still performs flawlessly. Focusing is faster than the other cameras, I think because it has a separate Digic chip dedicated to focusing. This is true in sports and at parties. Highlight control (a form of HDR) allows me to use a flash to show the fur of a white fur coat in a dimly lit party while attaining proper exposure of the person. I regularly shoot indoors in low light of bars/restaurants at ISO 16,000 when I have to and it allows great website use images. At ISO 6400 the Speedlite 600EX-RT helps focus quickly and at 1/128 flash power at F2.8 at six feet it preserves background lighting. That means I don't blind the patrons or interrupt the mood. There is noticeable grain at ISO 16,000. ISO 3200 seems to be the limit before getting grain if I know I'm going to print an image. The fast 14 FPS requires practicing a quick pause to re-atain focus with moving people. The fast FPS allows capturing the expression and moment better than professionals using slower cameras when we compare photos afterwards. The live-view mode focusing is still much slower. It is cumbersome to switch live-view shooting from movie mode to still mode, but when you do, it allows fantastic flexibility. You can even change ISO while filming. It is true that you can set a fast shutter speed, make a 1920x1080, 30fps movie and make a still frame using Canon's software and post a photo that people will swear is a “normal picture” and have no idea it was pulled from a video. The custom buttons allow the AF-ON button to Focus/Expose and the * button to go to full program mode. It's brilliant that some Speedlite Functions can be set with the Custom Shooting Modes. I wish the Flash Exposure Bracketing would be remembered in Custom Shooting Modes. My favorite feature is the quick access to HDR Exposure Bracketing by holding down the two MODE/DRIVE buttons. Oh, and be sure your camera bag will hold it.(The Canon camera bag holds it perfectly.) The 1Dx is big and has powerful recognition and status with fellow photographers.

The autofocus speed is incredible and image quality is amazing. I have shot it exclusively over the last year and it continues to deliver. Numerous covers, gallery shots and assignments have come out of this camera. My only complaint is that it get excessive sensor dust/oil spots on the sensor and have to send it to CPS every few months for cleaning.

KNOCKED MY SOCKS OFF!!

Purchased a couple of these for sports....this camera in my opinion...easily qualifies as all the best cameras Canon® has made , all rolled into one. Ive always said they should have a full frame sports camera that is fast and can do all the things all the other models combined could do. I no longer need my Mark II 5D's or Mark III 1D's and Mark IIns....I am totally sold 100% on this model. I have been shooting College and professional Football the last three weeks of Sept 2012 with the 1DX and have literally not had one out of focus image...from well over 10,000 images! Just for fun, I photographed a High School football game and shot with a 600mm f4, at 32,000 ISO and was shooting 1/2000 with no noticeable noise at all.
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

Could Be The Best Camera In The World

I have had this camera for over a year now and I absolutely love it. The image/video quality in low light and at high ISO settings are almost mind blowing. I give Canon a lot of credit for going with the 18mp size sensor on their flagship model. The sensor, because it has the larger pixels, can capture more light per pixel, a more quality image in a slightly smaller package (which is also great for time lapse, as 35+ mb files add up much faster than 22 mb files do.)
I use this camera for both still and motion picture, often times simultaneously. Having had a pro-body in the past, I could never go back to a smaller body without the pro functions, at least not as my primary camera, although the Mark III was tempting. The image quality that you get with the 1D-x is just to good to pass up, not to mention its feel in your hands, solid and accessibility of control. I started as a photographer and have since morphed into doing both still and video work. I actually bought the 1D-X to replace my old 1D-S because of the video functionally, as I was starting to get into that type of work more.
The only con I have with this camera is the lack of clean HDMI out, and for multiple reasons I need this function. I use a HD electronic view finder, but with the dirty HDMI signal it is both hard to focus and the output that goes to a monitor for a director to see, or the client, is all slightly soft. That in turn confuses me, the director and the client. Focus is hard, this makes it harder.
Had I known that the 5D Mark III was going to have clean HDMI out and the 1D-X never would I think I would have bought the Mark III with some glass to boot. That being said, now that I have shot with the 1D-X for a year, and with the hopes that Canon puts a clean HDMI out on it, I do not regret my decision at all. But If they do not, I will have to sell what could have been the best camera in the world.
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: lack of clean hdmi out

I simply can not state how fabulous the 1DX is. I shot for years with a 7D with superb results. The 1DX put it over the top with the results. There is not a camera available that matches the performance of this camera

I am a professional and have been using Canon products for 30+ years and I have found this 1DX to be superior in every way that I have used it so far. I photograph wildlife and need that speed, plus the advantages of the ISO range with out noise is out of this world. I own 2 1Ds mark III's, and I plan on getting at least 2 more of the 1DX's. Only regret is that I didn't get the 1DX sooner.
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
