This is by far the best and most powerful laptop I have ever owned. I need something powerful for data analysis and number crunching for my work and this does the trick. It is sleek, professional, and compact. The keyboard is fantastic to type on, it is a fantastic experience to do so.
There are a few cons (like anything): 1) Expensive - No doubt this is not a cheap machine. That was one thing that made me hesitant about this laptop, but to find a laptop with these specs for cheap difficult.
2) Loud - The fans are loud. It sounds like a jet engine when under heavy loud.
3) Speakers - The speakers could be a little better. They are mediocre at best, and
4) Fingerprint magnate - This is by far my biggest gripe. It is a fingerprint magnate. It is very easy for the chassis to attach fingerprints and smudges. Its almost like I need to use fine white gloves for this thing to not attract any smudges.
Nonetheless, despite these issues, this laptop is a great product, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is thinking about taking the plunge. I am very happy with my purchase.
I bought this a little bit ago to use for school and for work. Mostly programming and some modelling and simulation. Laptop is bulletproof in terms of security, speed and function. Not to mention the form which has an industrial feel which I love.
This is an investment worth making. The laptop itself is super fast (comparable to a high-end PC), quality build, professional, super easy to use, BEST keyboard, nice screen and overall a great laptop. I run demanding software (e.g. MATLAB on multiple cores working with big data sets), occasionally play games and have had no problem so far. The fans comes on very occasionally (during gaming mostly) but that is not an issue for me. It is a light laptop too given its specs. Overall, I certainly recommend X1 extreme to anyone who's looking for a laptop that can basically do everything (gaming, working and so on).
I would recommend this to a friend!

Thank you for taking the time to leave your comments and concerns in our Ratings & Reviews section! Lenovo takes our customer’s feedback very seriously. Comments from our customers help us to continually evaluate our current products and services, and if necessary, change to better accommodate your needs. We are happy to hear that you are enjoying your ThinkPad X1 Extreme. We want our customers to have a superior experience with our products. We appreciate your feedback!
Also, all high performance machines, like this one, have fans to keep them operating at optimum temperatures. We recommend utilizing our Lenovo Vantage app by making sure all of your drivers are up to date. This will ensure your systems performance level. Additionally, there a quiet mode option you may choose within the app to turn on. Go to hardware settings, power, then switch from high performance to quiet mode. My brand new laptop is shutting down randomly without notification. Really sad experience. Was lookin really forward to work with my new laptop. Now I'm all frustrated
Performs excellent; as of now not fully loaded, yet has a current startup of 39 seconds. Startup will slow down by a very small margin if left unchanged (1min.) Programs run well so far. Graphics run well so far. All past issues seem to have been ironed out (forums). F.I.D.O. & fingerprint reader are excellent for Windows Hello sign in, although it is a shame that a 3rd party vendor is required for the rest. Nice security hardening. Very glad for additional Wi-Fi security by Coronet, as well as Lenovo Vantage (Works good with network hardware also). Quality of build is good: delivers as advertised. Rating would have been higher if not for the 'Regional differences' & the information lacking from the website when ordering - otherwise, the only complaint would be the high price with no touch-screen & HQ speakers (Sound is surprisingly good: earbuds/phones are better still).
The overall product is very well made and super powerful. Unfortunately, fans are way too noisy. No apps are running and there's that jet engine sound coming from the fans. They go on and off so it's hard to get used to. People at the office are gonna hate me for using that machine.
Also, when screen is black, I could see white spots on borders.
Not Linux friendly despite what is said on the web site. From what I read, it's because of the dual GPU.
So in my opinion, a 5000$+ laptop should not have these problems. I returned it and will get myself something else.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Welcome to our Ratings and Reviews section!
What does Linux certification mean for our customer? It means a system has been tested with a defined Linux distribution and most of the basic functions work. We highly recommend using the two following links to cross-reference your machine with machines that are compatible and certified in using the Linux/Ubuntu system:
We maintain a website for our customers (http://www.lenovo.com/linux) to access if they have questions about Linux on our products. This Web site contains a listing of the products that have been certified and hints or tips for the customer to utilize when enabling certain functions. While we try to enable as much function as possible, no claim is made concerning full support for any version of Linux. Please let us know if this helps. Thanks for choosing Lenovo!
