WD My Passport Ultra failing
on October 6, 2022
Posted by: Ben A
I bought three WD My passport Ultra of 1 TB a few years ago. After a few months they started failing. Copying became extreme slow (10 kb/s), the disks started making noises. I connected them directly via the USB3 port. Not via a usb hub or something. The quality is very poor. I can't understand why WD is selling these nowadays. I have other WD HD's which are good. I will never buy WD products again. Nobody likes to be fooled.

Hello,

We're sorry to hear your user experience with the WD My Passport Ultra Hard Drive and appreciate your time for providing this review.

There can a few causes due to which the drive has behaving abnormally. Such causes include the faulty USB port of the drive or the computer, faulty USB cable of the drive or the drive itself may not be getting enough power to spin up and register on the computer to show up. Unsafe ejection of the drive during any read or write operation can also result in the corruption of the drive's partition.

Best practice is to run diagnostics with WD Drive Utilities when a drive does not perform as expected or is behaving abnormally. We recommend avoiding USB hubs for external hard drives and therefore connect the drive directly to a USB 3.0 port on the computer. We have placed a few helpful links below providing more information for your convenience.

If the test is unfortunately inconclusive and you just purchased the drive then you should be able to return it to the place of purchase. However, if you are past their return policy, you can create an RMA through WD and replace the drive under warranty if necessary.

Hi.. My recently purchased (10 days back) My Passport Ultra drive is getting heated up easily even in not copying. While copying about 100 GB, it is getting heated up to 46 deg C. Sometimes comes to 48 deg C. Even without copying it comes to 42 - 43 deg C. Please give your reply.

So Sad! Farewell WD/ Western Digital!

I purchased the My Passport Ultra 5TB and received it today. As soon as I plugged in into my USB port, the Clicking began, aka "The Click Of death". I noticed a lot of people that have experienced connectivity issues have laptops. I am so glad I didn't get hooked on those devices. I prefer speed over convenience. Being a system builder by profession and hobby, I never have connectivity issues. However, this drive suffers from mechanical issues. Oh yes, I did experience where the computer no longer recognized the drive, but that only lasted for a short time. After seeing the price being less expensive for a 5TB over a 4TB, you know that there is an issue with the device based on its capac
I have had two 1TB My Passport, and one 2TB Elements that I purchased years ago. You know what? They continue to run a peak efficiency.
My data is too important to me to trust WD any further. They sell drives that they know have an issue and continue to sell them.

Handy, non-cloud-based storage

I've utilized this drive for about a month now. It holds up well and has been reliable. I store information I'd rather keep handy instead of being enslaved to an internet connection each time I want to revise or prepare necessary and immediate work. It's my second Passport Ultra and I recommend them for handy electronic storage.

Hello,

We are sorry to hear about your user experience with My Passport External Hard Drive and appreciate your time providing this review and bringing this matter to our attention.

Based on your concern, if the drive is not showing up on the computer then it could be due to insufficient power supply to the drive for operation. To isolate the cause of the drive failure, it is recommended to connect the drive as secondary storage via SATA port to the computer and check the drive for any damage or defect by following the information provided in the link below.
