This piece of CRAP never performed for me!! The "SUPPORT" system was a hilarious joke. I never was able to reach anyone who could help. Any one who purchases backup equipment / accessories from Western Digital is a FOOL!!
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Passports just not cutting it without WD back-up s
on September 23, 2024

I always counted on WD passport drives. One of the main reasons was the ease and simplicity if their backup software. I discovered this after purchasing several new passports. I work with a lot of seniors that are not computer savvy. So maybe they are only saving a billion pictures of their pets or the grandkids, it was simple and should someone become confused I could always walk them through whatever fix was necessary. The list of backup software WD provides just doesn’t provide the simplicity needed for the non-technical individual . There really isn’t a reason to recommend passports any longer.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

So Sad! Farewell WD/ Western Digital!

I purchased the My Passport Ultra 5TB and received it today. As soon as I plugged in into my USB port, the Clicking began, aka "The Click Of death". I noticed a lot of people that have experienced connectivity issues have laptops. I am so glad I didn't get hooked on those devices. I prefer speed over convenience. Being a system builder by profession and hobby, I never have connectivity issues. However, this drive suffers from mechanical issues. Oh yes, I did experience where the computer no longer recognized the drive, but that only lasted for a short time. After seeing the price being less expensive for a 5TB over a 4TB, you know that there is an issue with the device based on its capac
I have had two 1TB My Passport, and one 2TB Elements that I purchased years ago. You know what? They continue to run a peak efficiency.
My data is too important to me to trust WD any further. They sell drives that they know have an issue and continue to sell them.

Hello,
We're sorry to hear your user experience with the WD My Passport Portable Hard Drive and appreciate your time for providing this review.
Best practice is to run diagnostics with WD Drive Utilities when a drive does not perform as expected or is behaving abnormally. We recommend avoiding USB hubs for external hard drives and therefore connect the drive directly to a USB 3.0 port on the computer. We have placed a few helpful links below providing more information for your convenience.

If the test is unfortunately inconclusive and you just purchased the drive then you should be able to return it to the place of purchase. However, if you are past their return policy, you can create an RMA through WD and replace the drive under warranty if necessary.

This purchase was a big mistake by me. WD used to provide great hardware and software to help individuals safely and securely back up their home systems. No more. While the hardware may be fine, the Acronis software and installation was a nightmare on my new Windows 11 Dell computer. The software installation failed several times with Windows 11error messages about file security, etc. It was only on my 3rd attempt that the software installed even still with the OS error messages. The Acronis backup setup was VERY confusing and not user friendly at all. After some period of time I was able to actually see and understand what dir. and files were being backed up. But then while testing to make sure changed files were backed up, I found you could not even see the backup files on the drive w/o going thru some technical hoops to be able to read the data. I was so disappointed in WD as I had previously used their drives and backup software with great success. Finally, I was so frustrated with this Acronis software and lack of user friendliness, that I chucked the whole drive in the trash and went out and purchased a Seagate 2tb drive and software that works perfectly and is very user friendly. This experience was a total waste of time and money for me.

Terrible Cable
on June 9, 2021
Posted by: usalplaster
The included cable with this product is terrible. It didn't work with my Windows 10 install. Initially Windows didn't even recognize a drive was connected. As soon as I used a third party cable the drive came to live. The connection with the OEM cable is wobble, and falls out constantly. It won't stay connected to the drive or my USB C port on my laptop. Plan on investing in a Third party cable if you buy this product.

Drive is fine; Software leaves a bit to be desired
on June 17, 2021

Verified Purchase:Yes
Hardware is fine. WD's backup software can be difficult, Acronis for WD is better, but not perfect. Portable Hard Drives have been around for quite some time. One would think that a major supplier of portable Hard Drives, like WD, would have perfected the software so that it is a no-brainer to install (automatically) and use. They used to call this Plug and Play.

Hello,
We are sorry to hear about your user experience with My Passport External Hard Drive and appreciate your time providing this review and bringing this matter to our attention.
Based on your concern, if the drive is not showing up on the computer then it could be due to insufficient power supply to the drive for operation. To isolate the cause of the drive failure, it is recommended to connect the drive as secondary storage via SATA port to the computer and check the drive for any damage or defect by following the information provided in the link below.
