Small, light, peace of mind

The device is small, light, and provided peace of mind for both me and my wife. My primary reason for upgrading from the Spot Gen 3 was to be able to receive inbound texts. Outbound texts are nice but less essential since I had the limited fixed messages from the Spot. I'm still on the bubble regarding the UI: The Mini's 3-button on-device menu plus small display is painful, even for simple tasks. On the other hand, paired with my phone, it seems like I shouldn't care as much about the device UI. I love being able to interact with the Mini without removing my pack to access the device. In my experience so far (canoe trek and day hike), I'm still drawn to physically interactive with the device, maybe I'll become more focused on access by the phone as I get more experience. Negatives: the Mini is more expensive in both fixed and subscription cost. The mini's battery charge has to be watched/recharged whereas the Spot was essentially infinite. The Mini is harder to attach to my pack in a way that doesn't want to swing around reacting to pack motion. Overall, I think the positives will greatly out weigh the negatives. Time will tell!

It is probably good but l am having a hard time learning its features and how to use them. After about 20 hours of trying I think I'm about 20% done.

Trouble sending messages
on April 5, 2019

Unfortunately I received my Mini the day before my hike. I sent out 2 messages. One using the app from my iPhone and one from the Mini. Neither went through . I have been able to send out messages when I am at home but that is useless. Hopefully I can figure out the trouble.

Ease of use, Peace of mind

As an Adventure motorcyclist I should've had one of these long ago. Recently a friend was involved in a mishap off grid and luckily someone in our group had a Garmin. We were able to arrange services from our remote location without a problem. Can't rely on others having one of these (it's seldom anyone has one) so I had to have one for peace of mind when going off grid. Setup was very easy, the size is perfect for putting in a pocket or hanging off your riding suit, and it pairs with your mobile which makes it very easy to send emails and texts with Garmin's app - Earthmate. Like many things in life, it's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. If you go off grid, are away from cell services, travel foreign lands, whatever you do - give yourself the peace of mind of staying connected to friends, family, or emergency services if needed.

Not reliable

It would be great if it were reliable... It is having problems working with the ATT network, so it's almost useless until that is fixed...
Response from GarminBy Chris, Garmin, April 30, 2019
Sorry you were having concerns. That particular problem will be temporary and is on the AT and T provider side. We are actively working with them to correct this issue and it will be resolved very soon.
