In conjunction with the mobile app it's super simple and a great piece of hardware. The subscription plans are a tad steep in price, but your life (and others with you) is worth it.
I have a friend who uses the Garmin inReach on all of his solo trip and checks in daily, this little piece of equipment could be a life saver. Seeing this I bought one myself and use it on all rugged hunting and fishing trips.
Just got back from a month in Nepal attempting to summit a 23,000' peak. The Mini was great for keeping in touch with my family. No incidents, so the SOS function wasn't used, but it was great to text my wife and kids twice each day; we were 11:45 off Denver time, so I'd have a message waiting when I woke up, and left one for them while they were sleeping too. Great that a tool for piece of mind also functions for more mundane uses.
Great little gadget and absolutely packed with features for its size. Will use it mainly for emergency communications and checking in with loved ones when outside of cell coverage. If I want fancier navigation features, Ill get a fancier navigation device. This device is small enough to go on any adventure, and adds the piece of mind that I can connect to the outside world even in the most remote areas. Seamless bluetooth pairing with my iPhone, it connects right when the inReach is turned on and I can keep the inReach clipped to the back of my pack and use the earthmate app on my phone to peruse all the messaging and navigation features without ever having to touch the inReach.

I purchased this as a means to communicate with family and contact emergency services if necessary. I travel a lot off grid on an adventure motorcycle. This is the best reviewed and smallest unit I could find. I purchased it for peace of mind while adventuring and it allows for me to explore farther and always know that I have a means of communication.

I purchased the mini mainly to be inyouch in case of emergency while out on the trail or lack thereof. The mini pairs easily with your smart phone. No complaints so far.
