Love my InReach Mini
on January 22, 2025

I have had it many years. I pay the monthly fee to give my spouse peace of mind that I can text from anywhere. If I never have to use the emergency functions, that is fine. I know it is there if I need it.

The support people have been trying to help me for a few weeks now, but nothing. they say it needs some update, but can't figure out how to get it connected to the computer for the update. I'm paying for the subscription, but it's useless. I'm definitely frustrated.

Bought the old model and wish I didn't

So I'm cheap and bought the old Mini rather than the Mini2. I mostly day hike but do hike some overnights and all of my hikes are in remote areas where there is no cell service. I use it to communicate with my family during the hikes.
I was a little surprised at how quickly the battery drains. I believe it is because the trails are under pretty thick canopy so the device struggles to maintain a clear signal... While I do carry a battery bank for emergency charging, I would really rather not have to use it to charge this device. So far I have not had to use the battery bank but the battery in the Mini does drain pretty quickly.
I wish I would have spent the extra $$ and bought the newer model that has a significantly longer battery life.
I am only giving this 3 stars because of the battery life and the terrible app. I think the old app is well known to be terrible... And I agree.

Fantastic way to make your location available to others when you are off grid. Allows you to text with a subscription through garmin, using satellites when cell is not an option. Also allows you to track your movement, waypoints, and routes using downloaded maps. Easy to use when paired to your cell phone, using garmin explore app.

Great for Thru-Hiking

Easy to use, keeps me in touch with my family when I go on extended backpacking trips. Has a texting feature that allows me to check in nightly and a gps function that allows them to follow my progress while on trail. InReach is good for all levels and is also good for day hiking.
