Subscription for device is too expensive. Not worth it.

Great to upgrade to 2-way communications
on August 20, 2023

I upgraded to a Mini (V1) from a Spot Gen 3 communicator I’ve had for 5 years. The mini is considerably smaller and offers 2-way communications when I’m hunting. The iPhone app is pretty basic, and once I figured out that pre-configured messages (free to send) need be composed on my laptop then downloaded to the phone via a wire connection (why can’t it connect via bluetooth to the laptop?), I was able to get it set up. So far, it’s worked well in a couple test runs communicating with my wife.
I’m finding the battery life is not the 90-hours with 10 minute tracking advertised. I do day hunts in grizzer areas of Montana, so recharging it overnight at home works for me. One morning hiuting pronghorns I went from 100% to 68% in about 5 hours, no tracking and 3 outgoing messages and 2 incoming messages. That extrapolates to 15 hours- with no tracking. If I was doing multi-day hunts, I’dl be carrying a supplemental battery to make sure it’s charged. Technical support gave me a very nice “ your mileage may vary” answer when I called and said I think there’s a problem with the battery.

Delivers peace of mind

I bought my current inReach Mini to replace my previous Garmin, which lasted for years. It will continue to deliver peace of mind to me and my family while I’m out on trail.

Perfect Safety Investment

I recently bought an Inreach Mini and love it! I created my own personal MapShare page that’s protected by username and password. I’ve shared those credentials with my husband and my parents so at any point in my adventures, then can request my location and see where I am. This is an optional feature so if you prefer stealth, you don’t need to use this. After each hike I hop on Garmin Explore and can see my tracks and routes, then I export them to .gpx and bring them into GIS to store them in a project field work file geodatabase. I love knowing I can send an SOS for help whenever I need to and have taught my kids how to do it in case they ever need to send one for me.
Overall the device is lightweight, pairs to my iphone using the Garmin Earthmate app (where I’ve uploaded GIS data for my own reference).
It allows me to send either preset messages from the device itself (starting my trip now; checking in and everything is okay; ending my trip now…etc) or stuff like “I’m running about an hour late and I’m already sore…pizza tonight?” to my husband through my phone.

The right solution

Bought it for solo hunting trips. With a wife and two young kids at home it was perfect for the family to have peace of mind while I was out in the mountains away from cell service. Pairing with the app and being able to use my phone to type messages, or using the presets right from the device made comms so quick and easy. I also loved it has weather updates, tracking, and navigation.

Generally good, but I find that it takes a long time for it to start tracking. Don't know if that's unique with my device, but maybe not.

Peace of Mind

It took a bit to set up. Waiting for a satellite transmission instead of instant WI-FI took some getting used to. Blue tooth to phone is a great feature to set up. I am still unclear what happens when my phone goes dead. Directions could be improved.
