I'm happy to have a way to send communications to my family while I'm backpacking, and they are extremely happy to be able to track my location while I am in the backcountry. I used the larger inReach last year on a backpacking trip and am looking forward to the smaller size and lighter weight of the mini.
Purchased the inreach Mini to use on hikes and while off-road but so far is been a expensive paper weight. If you buy this devices, you should buy it two (2) weeks before any trip as you might experience problems activating the unit.

I'm a guide and outfitter in NW MT. There's no cell service within 40 miles of my home. The inReach is easy to set up, easy to use. It's nice to be able to communicate with family and friends if I hunt in an area that is different from where I said I'd hunt, if I'm going to be late getting back or if I need help packing out an elk or moose. I hope I never need it, but it's nice to know the SOS is right on my shoulder, if I do.
Just got and have only had it out once I'm Grayson-Highlands VA. All is good and felt so much better that I had communication as I was hiking alone. Just need to have some time to sit at my computer and get everything set-up. Well worth the cost in my mind

Great little PLB with good battery life (with plenty of options to extend based on how much you want to update), two way messaging, and subscriptions are reasonable (which you can pause whenever you're not using it)
I have been researching a tracking device for some time now and settled on the inReach mini mostly because of the subscription rates and the fact that I already have other Garmin products (Fenix 5, etc.). But OMG why do all Garmin products need to be so complicated? You need 3 interfaces to make this thing work!!! You need 2 programs: GarminExpress and inReach sync and you need to access Garmin explore.garmin.com!!! Any changes you make to contacts etc. online can only be synced through the desktop program. Why??? Otherwise the size is great and there are multiple ways to work around text fees and get free tracking sent to followers. Please Garmin, reduce the user effort for your products...
