Couldn't explore the winter backcountry without it
on January 27, 2022

I live in Vail CO and spend many days in the backcountry alone. After two near fatal accidents in Moab UT canyons I rely on my Mini knowing that my wife can find me should I be unable to use the SOS button because you can die out there from the weather.

Failed to connect to Satellite
on January 28, 2022
Posted by: dbr1
I bought this about a month ago and signed up for the subscription right away. I set up the device except for the final stage in which it connects to the satellite. The device kept attempting to connect over and over no matter where I was. The device was searching for a connection until it eventually died.

Customer Service = best I've ever experienced!

Garmin's customer service is some of the best I've ever experienced - that's saying so much during this labor shortage we've been in! The inReach itself is super great - compact, able to utilize their app for satellite messaging capabilities, and I love how well it tracks your movements & displays them in a geographical map.

Peace of mind!
on January 28, 2022

I live in an area where we have very little or no service once we get out of town. I spend alot of time hunting, hiking, and exploring far from a ranch or main road. I had no way of contacting family or friends to let them know I was ok or to come get me if I had a breakdown or was stuck. With the Garmin Inreach I am able to contact them anytime and any place. It has given me and my family alot of peace of mind to know I am always Inreach ;) of their messages and can contact them if I need help or to let them know I am ok!

It does the job, but doesn't stand out

TLDR: It seems to do what it's supposed to but doesn't perform as well as other Garmin products.
In today's world of the integrated product experience Garmin has a bit of way to go. I purchased this for the peace of mind while hiking in the back country. It does well for this, reliably tracking my steps and keeping me informed of how far I've gone and knowing there is the SOS button makes me and my spouse feel better.
Setup: I'm a long time Garmin user - bike computers, watches, etc. However, the set-up for the InReach is weird. I needed to create yet another Garin account specific to the InReach. This took about 10 tries since it didn't work well with Google Chrome. Switching to Microsoft Edge worked on the first try.
The Garmin Earthmate mobile app installed easily and paired with the unit without any issues.
Usage: The first use on a small, local hike the unit took a very long time to acquire a satellite signal and never did send the message that I was starting the hike. On my second outing it was tracking but didn't seem to record anything. On the third outing it tracked the first half of my hike, and then only two points on the return - resulting in a 'straight line' shown on the map.
Apps & Maps: The Garmin Earthmate app is just OK. I requested a weather update as I started writing this review and am still waiting for it to arrive. The maps provided by Garmin are really bad. If you are familiar with Gaia, Guthook or other map services you will be really disappointed. The readability and accuracy of the provided maps is pretty bad (they were missing some trails and trail heads).
PS - weather update just arrived. Expecting a severe winter storm tomorrow with blizzard conditions and up to 24 inches of snow. Garmin weather predicts a 20% chance of snow with accumulation of .35 inches. Not sure I would trust that.

difficult to text
on January 30, 2022

I bought this a month ago. The SOS function is the main point, and I guess that works fine. But it's difficult to figure out how to send texts--I've more or less given up.

Great device, feel much safer, needs tracking app
on January 31, 2022

We spend lots of time far away from cell signals and emergency assistance, but we feel much safer having our little red inReach GPS tracking device. The excellent breadcrumb feature is especially important. Number one on our wish list is a dedicated tracker app where any authorized person can easily track the device on a map.

Unreliable...
on February 1, 2022

For an item that can mean the difference between life and death, this product should be considerably more reliable in its functioning. It worked fairly well (with vastly varying send and receive durations) below 14,000 feet but above that (on Aconcagua) it was random hit and miss. When it did work, it was quite awesome though!
