Good & Useful
on September 28, 2021

I've had the device for about a month. I see great utility beyond the SOS feature, but the learning curve is more than I expected. I am getting the hang of it and expect after an upcoming hiking trip the rating will improve. Support has been excellent in assisting me.

Peace of mind for my spouse
on September 28, 2021

My spouse really likes the peace of mind she has when I am out of cell phone reach. Last week I hiked the Grand Canyon from the South Rim to the North Rim at night during the full Harvest Moon. I set the tracker function to leave a track point every 10 minutes so she and my friends could watch my progress by using a link I gave them. This was great plus I left her several predetermined messages along the way letting her know that things were fine with us and we were continuing to hike. My friends thought it was fun to check in on our progress throughout our hike with the link.

One additional software feature would make it grea
on September 29, 2021

First one I had took forever to acquire the GPS signal, returned it for a new one that works much better, BUT if it is paired with a phone or watch that has better multi-constellation GPS glotnass or whatever and they know the location, why doesn't the software just ask them to get the GPS started up faster?

Works well, but slow

I really appreciated the ability to keep in touch with family while in the backcountry. However, even with a clear view of the sky the acquisition of signal took a couple of minutes and send/receive of messages even longer. Of course, I didn’t need the SOS feature but not confident that urgent messages would reach target in time. All other features worked perfectly.

Great Gizmo

I live in Idaho and the Sawtooths bear no cell signal. My wife got me this knowing I was planning on getting one. The peace of mind for her when our son and I were in the wilderness backpacking was worth every penny. There is some delay with the Iridium system with sending and receiving messages, but considering what is taking place its not a big deal at all. I linked to my iPhone and used the AllTrails app along with the Garmin app. There are a few issues with connectivity but it is likely user-error. I would prefer a less complicated interface with the app, but its not a big deal. It worked pretty well. I would recommend if you're an outdoorsman who hunts, camps, whatever, outside of cell signal zones.

Not impressed

Bought this for my Idaho backcountry elk hunt that I just got back from. The Garmin was pretty easy to set up cost is obviously higher than others but it’s Garmin so I thought it’s be worth it, I feel like I made a mistake. My buddy in camp who also had a Garmin we had a terrible time trying to figure out how to message each other. No where could we find what number or turns out it’s an email to use. Messages were super slow to go through and go out even sitting in wide open spaces with a clear view of the sky on sunny days… 3 other guys in our group had a Zoleo. I didn’t want to go with Zoleo because I don’t know much about it but there messages went through almost instantly. They had a simple phone number that they could easily locate and send to whoever they needed. Zoleo paired well with their phone and was cheaper. Disappointed in such a brand that had a reputation for being one of the best for anything back country. Very much underperformed in my opinion.
