Inreach interface not at all user-friendly

This device is not user friendly. The SOS feature makes the device worth the cost, but I fear that I will freeze to death on a summit trying to send a preset message. And why are the presets ( the most important ones) harder to find on the display than the quick text messages? When I send a preset message from the inreach it can take up to 24 hours for the message to be received.

Too Complicated

The unit and app are too complicated. Not user friendly at all. Even the simple things are hard. I just want to send/receive texts and be able to send links to folks so they can follow me. It is confusing even after reading instructions and watching YouTube videos.

What did we do before the inReach?

I have used the inReach since they first hit the market. From sailing offshore and remote fjords of Alaska to packrafting in Central America to splitboarding in the high mountains of Alaska you will always see this product in my pack list. Not only do you have the peace of mind of one of the worlds largest safety net at the push of a button but you can let your family and friends in on the adventure. Going to be late from your trip? Let your loved ones know all is well. Want to tell your partner good night before you crawl into that sleeping bag? Want a GPS with downloadable maps on your cell phone? Here is the product that will do it all!

Pretty dissapointed

Right off the bat it was too cold from the ups truck to boot up! Had to warm it up to get it to charge. Tested the text feature at home to make sure it worked before I hit the backcountry and it worked but was annoying. When I was in the backcountry I tested a text again and It never went through, also didn't tell me for a day and half. Hope the SOS feature is more reliable. Its possible I am doing something wrong but I'm fairly competent when it comes to technology and it should be easier to use.

Awesome peace of mind

While the myriad combination of apps and website and cables to setup and sync the device are confusing as heck. Once setup, the device is an awesome little peace of mind to have while out in the backcountry. Highly recommend.

Give the home front peace of mind

I travel frequently where there is absolutely no cell service. As such for hours I can be unreachable. Needless to say, the family worries a bit. SAT phones are "nice" but very costly to operate and unless you absolutely need to be in touch IMO not necessary.
The inReach Mini is a great compromise showing trip progress to whomever you give access at a reasonable monthly charge.
I would say that the documentation does need help. As a 40+ year IT Executive I found the "instructions" left a lot of room for improvement.

Light weight, I can keep in contact with my people while out in the mountains and have the added security of SOS feature. Also, light weight! 3.5 oz.
