inReach Mini is the perfect lightweight satellite device.

The inReach mini is perfect for anyone looking to carry a lightweight, compact, and multifunctional satellite device. I have owned mine for two years now and have used it for backcountry dirtbiking, mountain biking, climbing, wilderness camping trips, and scuba diving. It works great for mid-trip communication with folks back home, planning around weather events, mapping routes (including correcting inaccurate existing maps), and has saved my butt after a nasty dirt bike crash. This device does everything it is meant to extremely well, is easy to use and integrates well with smartphones. I have owned two other satellite phones/communicators before this one and I do not plan on going back or searching for anything else.

Terrible instructions!!

I bought the InReach so I could keep in contact with people at home via text. I was able to link the unit to my IOS phone with no problem. I then spent hours trying to set up a contact list and was unable to. I am very disappointed and this defeats my reason for buying the InReach. I have a SPOT which works great, but the InReach has great features which are useless if I can’t figure out how to access them. I’m really bummed.

I paired my mini inreach with the Garmin Overlander. It provides the peace of mind in that my Family can view my progress and know where I am and having the ability to send text while of cell phone service is GREAT.

The device itself works as it should for what I’ve tried so far. I really only use it to communicate check-ins while I’m on my motocamping trips. I’m not happy with syncing, though. I can’t seem to get my syncing to work on my Mac (dongles on dongles, and I think the problems might be the dongles). The Mac can never recognize the Garmin. I just use other people’s PCs, but the last time I did it, it apparently didn’t sync like it was supposed to.
Once it’s all synced it works pretty well. It keeps my family from worrying about me, and I can feel more confident about riding on the backroads and camping by myself.

Great idea but awful menu and the flow of screens

I recently bought the device because I ride backwards and a lot of solo trips and really want to have a small SOS Beacon that I could carry but I have to be honest and tell everyone that the menu system and the ease of use of this device is among the worst I've used in the last 20 years. It doesn't flow well it doesn't it doesn't make a whole lot of sense and there's 2 and there's too much stuff you don't need and none of the things that would be really helpful.

Very useful and essential bit of kit

Garmin’s inReach devices are literally life savers. In our job of conservation and protected area management, our teams are most often very remote and out of reach. It is comforting to know they are inReach with their inReach device.

Messages are not being pushed to my phone via Bluetooth. Only sometimes. I've got 4 "unread" messages on the Inreach, but I can't find them or mark existing as read. I'm sailing alone 100-200 miles offshore and deserve better!!!

a responsible tool for those of us that choose to be irresponsible on the regular

from Ketchum, ID, US
I recently purchased this unit.
Here's why: after an in-town medical scare last summer, my primary doctor recommended that if I was going to continue to go on with solo missions in the mountains surrounding town where mobile service is non-existent, it would be a "best practice" for me to carry a way to communicate to the outside world in the case I have an accident and require assistance. My significant other also wants me to have a way to communicate out if needed.
I looked at a number of options, and this fit my criteria for size/weight, good battery life, ease of integration with a phone via Bluetooth for writing longer messages if needed, and the service plan, for me, was a good option - I like the annual subscription to guarantee the service plan is activated every time I'm out there, with no need to remember to buy service or activate. I'm also out in the no-mobile-service zone from Ketchum within 20 minutes of town, so the satellite network connectivity is very relevant every week around here.
I haven't had a need to use the device yet for an emergency call, and I did not buy it with the intention of creating the opportunity for more connectivity so I can stay "logged in" while I'm out recreating, so I don't have much to offer in terms of opinion on the functionality of the unit. I did read the user manual, watched some tutorials from Garmin, and otherwise became familiar with the various settings of the device. That was time well spent as the first time I need this thing in an emergency I'm already familiar with the operation.
It's worth noting that navigation tech wasn't part of my criteria.
Glad to add this gear as piece of mind for my loved ones and to facilitate some level of comfort on their part that if things go awry I have a way to let them know.
