Loving my InReach Mini

I took the Mini out for my first backpacking weekend in the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho and it was brilliant. Love the tracking, the weather reports, the ability to pair with my phone and be in touch with my wife across the distance. This small device is elegant and efficient.

Big improvement over the old inReach

I've been an inReach user for years and really appreciate the display and the "stand-alone" features of this unit. Also, the tiny size makes it much more likely that I'll have the unit with me. I never could find a good spot for the old one on my bicycle. Not sure I like the rechargeable battery yet. There are times when I'd just like to pop in a fresh battery and go without worrying about whether or not I have time to recharge it.

Light weight, easy to use, essential

I love that this is so lightweight! I will be returning my other garmin for another mini! With the app it is so simple to use. I recommend this phone to everyone whether traveling or outdoors- it’s an essential! My boyfriend recently called for help on a backpacking trip when someone in his party took a big fall and suffered a compound fracture. I’ll never leave for a trip without mine!

I Much Prefer the Smaller Size

I find carrying the inReach Mini on my travels far more convenient than its' sibling models due to its being substantially in the context of both size and weight. With the same functionality of the predecessor models, the only drawback is the smaller screen size. My main use is using the satellite communication capability when out of cellular range. While the screen size makes it quite more difficult and a standalone basis as compared to the other models, I always bring along my cellular phone which has a 6" screen. (Yes, it is not a question of not bring the phone when I am going out of cell range.) Having, installed the Garmin Earthmate app on my phone, messaging is now far easier than with the other inReach models. That is, both in compiling the outgoing messages and reading replies. In this operational context, I always bring the cellphone and with that in one pocket, I find the far smaller inReach Mini much more convenient than the larger models of inReach.

Great Device, Documentation and Apps Lacking

The device itself is very sophisticated and of high quality. But the user documentation and the apps are lacking. There are 3 apps that appear to pertain to the device, and documentation is spread across the Garmin/Inreach/Delorme website, the apps, and a summary user manual. Yet none of them is complete, and they are not consistent with one another. It has been quite a challenge to figure it all out. The respective functions of the Mini, one's cell phone phone, and one's computer are difficult to master - especially in the areas of syncing the 3 devices, messaging and mapping. A thorough rewrite would be welcome.

Great tool

I used this for the first time on a backcountry hike. Great marks for user friendliness and portability. Not so good performance in heavy timber. You definitely need a clear view of the sky. This could be an issue if you were injured and not able to get yourself to a position with a clear view. I was able to send and receive a message fairly quickly once I had that clear view. Battery life seems good as well. I think this will be useful but not necessarily life saving depending on the situation.
